All my life I've been the skinny guy. I've tried to gain muscle so many times you wouldn't believe it. I tried eating healthy and going to the gym. At some point I just stopped and accepted that my body was just not made for it. Now I know that no one is "made" for anything. Finally I was able to achieve my goals and become stronger than ever. The app helped me a lot as I didn't have a lot of experience learned the barbell movements with it through guided videos, my weights were increased automatically by its coach function and I was guided through every single workout. I couldn't have achieved what I did without it. ***UPDATE ON STARTING LIFTING NUMBERS*** I haven't actually done real 1RM tests in the beginning. These are just estimations based on the weights I trained with. I found a 1RM calculator online that said that it's pretty accurate up to 10 reps so I used its estimations. If I had known the technique better and if I had been able to push myself harder, I probably could have handled more weight but I was afraid to do the movements wrong and I found it kind of scary to use weights I am not sure I can handle - especially when it comes to bench press and squats. ***UPDATE ON NUTRITION*** I followed a very strict diet and without that, it would just not have been possible to change as drastically as I did. In general: I’m a pescetarian, that means, I don’t eat meat except for fish. I started with the Freeletics Nutrition Guide and applied the knowledge in a way that worked best for me. I will try to break it down to a few simple steps: 1) The key is finding what works best for you and then sticking to it: The first couple of weeks I only focussed on gaining weight as that has been my biggest struggle so far. High protein and high carb diet. Lot’s of fish and seafood. My calorie intake was up to about 4000kcal/day. After a while I realized that was too much as I was gaining fat as well and went down to a high protein moderate carb diet with a little more than 3000kcal which worked way better for me. My body developed the way I wanted it to and my performance went through the roof.. 2) No alcohol, no added sugar, no processed food at all. Real foods - that’s what is the basis for everyone. Don’t eat stuff you can’t pronounce. Just don’t do it. 3) It helps to track your calories and weigh your food. You need to know what you are eating as well as how much of it. It’s the same as for training: Doing the right exercises is the first step, programming it is the second. That's why the Freeletics Gym Coach worked for me. 4) Schedule your meals according to your day. Your body needs to be fueled with the right nutrients throughout the day and has special needs at certain times, i.e. I always ate a banana and drank a protein shake directly (15mins max) after training as the body needs carbs and proteins to regenerate and refuel. I also precooked my food for the whole day every morning. 5) Supplements: I took 5g of creatine and a protein shake right after each training. If you need to prevent black eye appearance, do the following: pour half a cup of rubbing alcohol, add one cup of dish soap, put it in a plastic bad, let freeze. And when it's ready apply to bruised spot. When you have a headache you can simply hold a pencil with your teeth. It helps to relax your jaw muscle and therefore reduces the pain! In case you're struggling with mosquitoes: cut couple of lemons in halves and put cloves in them. Place them on your night stand and forget about the nasty mosquitoes. Easy way to get rid of the toothache. Mix some salt, pepper and water in a bowl. Put this mixture on a cotton pad, apply to your tooth and wait 2 minutes. Also find out how to apply Band-Aids and elastic bandages correctly. There are those that claim that there are no body types and that everything is measured by hard work at the gym and in the kitchen and having been a trainer for over 10 years I can tell you and that's complete nonsense. And this is proven by science it is true that nobody should be obese however everybody does have their own weight set point people store fat in different places some people store more fat in their stomach area, other people store it more in their thighs, in the chest, and we also have different shapes to our muscle bellies, different lengths different thicknesses, different lagging muscle groups. The point is people really do come in all different shapes and sizes again this doesn't mean that you should be obese but it does mean that we can identify the shape or size that you're at by certain characteristics & apply certain training principles that have proven over time to work to move you towards your desired body shape. Okay so let's start with the test the way that this test works is I'm going to ask you a series of questions & your going to answer a b or c & either write down your answer or remember it because the letter that you answer with most often will help you identify what your body type is by the end of this test. Its a simple test & I'm sure you'll be surprised with the results. First question, do fitted jeans generally feel a. snug, but not too tight around your butt b. loose around your butt or c. tight around your butt. Pick the description that best fits your body Second question, if you wrap your hand around your wrist does your middle finger & your thumb a. just barely touch b. overlap or c. they don't touch. Next question would you characterize yourself as having a. a natural v shaped body b. a naturally very lean skinny long frame, or c. a naturally wide heavy frame. The fourth question requires a measuring tape so if you want to come back to it & leave it blank you can, but I highly recommend you do this one because it's very accurate. Is your chest measurement a. between 37 & 44 inches b. under 37 inches or c. greater than 44 inches? When you get to a measuring tape seriously do this one. The fifth question is how would you rate your metabolism a. fast, but you don't have a problem building muscle, b. so fast that it makes it difficult to put on muscle, or c. slow. Next question In relation to gaining weight its a. easy to gain muscle, but you don't typically gain too much fat. You may even see some ab definition while bukling b. you have trouble gaining muscle & gaining fat, in fact if you finally do gain a couple pounds your body fights to return you to your normal weight or are you more of a c. where its easy for you to put on muscle, but its also very easy for you to store fat especially around your midsection & love handles. Question number seven does your upper body resemble an a. upside down triangle, b. a rectangle that's vertically long & horizontally narrow or c. a square or round shape.two more questions. do you have an a. narrow rib cage thinner than your wider collar bones b. a narrow rib cage as narrow as your narrow collar bones & your narrow hips or c. a thick blocky rib cage as thick as your collar bones & your thick hips. And last question which body type do you look like in the mirror. a.b.or cIf you've answered a. to the majority of the questions you are at the mesomorph stage right now meaning you have a v-taper appearance. If you answered b to the majority of the questions then you are an ectomorph with more of a narrow lanky body, & if you answered c then you are an endomorph with wider thicker body. Now before I go any further I want to say that you are not stuck in your body type. That kind of thinking leads to people giving up & not working as hard at making the necessary changes to change your body type. And then it becomes a self fufilling prophecy. I don't care if you're the hardest gainer in the world, you can eat enough & drink enough soda if that's what it takes to spike your insulin to have you gain some weight. This man, a single widowed father raising his three sons went through life never looking for glory or praise, always living in deep commitment and always providing for those dear and close. I decided to take him on as my "client" as I was concerned by the unhealthy physical and psychological trends that were occurring. Committing to a transformation requires reshaping your whole person. Not only are you bettering yourself when you decide to make these changes, but you are making a meaningful difference in the lives of those around you. Dino was a smoker for 30+ years and lost both his parents and wife at a very young age. Aside from all of the external stressors in his life; his health, or lack there of, was bringing him down. With extremely high blood pressure and cholesterol, weighing in at over 300 lbs, he was soon diagnosed with Type II Diabetes. The doctors were concerned and his family was distraught. Habits are hard to break and almost become unconscious thoughts based on previous experience. Engaging in an alternative behavior and developing self-discipline and self-awareness will assist in gaining the will power to overcome an unhealthy and dangerous habit. He once told me he was inspired by my own transformation, and was a follower and enormous supporter of Fusaro Fitness. He was ready to make a change and listened without hesitation. Taking the time to further understand nutrition, tracking macronutrients, and correct training and nutrition protocols he was on board. With no access to anything but a small gym at work, his lunch break soon became "gym time." Sacrifices had to be made, but with a goal and a vision in mind, no excuses were acceptable. Continuing to track his progress and focus on small improvements, he was dropping weight and seeing results. Him and I were both on the same level of understanding, where mediocrity was simply unacceptable. Everyone wants to achieve their dreams but unfortunately in this "success-driven" world, the vast majority of people aren't willing to put in the necessary work to attain greatness. Currently, at 54 years old he is weighing in at 180lbs down from over 300. His blood work is excellent and he is off many of his prescribed medications. He is also smoke free for years now. This was all done without surgery, special pills, powder or supplements. It was done with a combination of hard work, dedication and consistency. Remember that success will never come easily, nor will it come automatically. What separates the great from the rest is not just a reoccurring dream but how they deal with the inevitable difficulties in life. Let's stop throwing this phrase "I Can't" around, because what the majority of us mean is "I won't" or "I am too afraid to try." Repeating, "I can't" is a good way to reinforce that message in your mind and make you truly believe it. The use of this negative language can be self-prophesying and we can bypass that by putting positive affirmations into our mind. It is perfectly fine to not want to do something, but more important to acknowledge the fact that if you wanted to do something YOU CAN. By saying "I can't" we remove any responsibility and convince ourselves we are powerless, but saying "I won't" implies that if we wanted to we could, but we choose not to. 'Won't" is more empowering so when we realize we are not the victim and come to terms that we DO have control over our lives, we will feel a huge sense of relief. Remember, We Are Limitless! My 12-point system to get a muscular body after the age of 40. I started at age 40 with a plan to change my body, this is how I looked…with many serious health issues. Fast forward and I am now nearly 51, this is a photo of me taken last week. EVERY YEAR I have managed to increase size, shape and aesthetics even past the age of 50. *** Kindly requesting a small donation for sharing my knowledge and life skills and to help me keeping my information and site free: https://www.paypal.me/GERTFITNESS *** This is my 10-point plan for obtaining a muscular body after the age of 40: Point 1 Sitting on the coach with a beer in one hand, fat tummy, watching tv and generally look bad, what you don’t realize is that what you are doing is slowly dying and killing yourself. You need to look life in the eye again, you need to choose life, get up and LIVE again. You need to change yourself from the inside. Appreciate the small things in life, start caring for people in need, make right with God, start liking the person you see inside and out and respect yourself. Such life altering choices make one want to get up and LIVE and go to gym to re-invent your body. Such choices make the whole process so much easier and WORTHWHILE… Point 2 Diet determines 80% of your bodybuilding success. You REALLY need to get to grip with this. If you are not prepared to follow proper muscle growth diet guidelines your body will not respond even to the best training and best supplements regimes. Your results will be very mediocre at best. This is what separate the hero’s from the average…the diet! No two bodies re-act the same to the exact same diet. Every 14 days you need to monitor how your body reacted the past 14 day to the diet to determine if you lost muscle weight (bad), fat (good) or both (bad) and then adjust the diet accordingly in a specific fashion. It is not as difficult as it sounds, here is a link to the exact process you need to follow: http://gertlouw.com/2015/06/01/forcin... Point 4 Training determines 15% of your bodybuilding success. Next to diet this is 2nd most important. You must train at least 4 times a week and not more than 5. At age above 40 the body need more time to recover and grow, I find 4 the best balance (Mon, Tues, Thurs, Frid). Less than 4 is not advisable. It is too infrequent training and put you in danger of injury and is not conducive to muscle growth. Keep sessions never longer than 90 mins preferably 50 min. Point5 Training MUST be split as follows due the body being older than 40: • 3 months building phase (6-8 reps per set, EACH set to complete muscle failure) • 1 week rest • 3 month cutting phase (12 – 20 reps per set , 30% lighter weights, never to failure) • 1 week rest • repeat The above training regime allows for a serious 3 month growth spurge but place serious strain on tendons and joints which then need to recover and strengthen during the cutting phase. You cannot start training top failure you need at least a 3 month period of gradual weekly weight and intensity increases to reach the starting point of muscle failure for the next 3 month with the building phase program. Point 6 During the building (growth) phase you MUST train to absolute muscle failure on each set. This is a key principle for growth. Failure means total and utter failure – mentally and physically you must not be able to lift that weight one more set. If you train with sufficient failure intensity you WILL grow! It's really simple: just sit down, bend your knees, and bring the soles of your feet together, almost like you’re going to sit criss-cross applesauce but without all the crissing and crossing. Hold onto your ankles, and use your elbows to gently push your knees toward the floor. - A tush push is also a wonderful alternative to getting your flexibility back to the way it was in your younger years. To do it, you have to stand up while keeping your feet as wide apart as possible, so hold onto the back of a chair if need be. - Not that many people know about this, but you can actually exercise your muscles not only from the outside but from the inside as well! And this static gymnastics exercise is going to be a huge help for you in that. Static gymnastics helps eliminate inner muscular spasms, and by doing just one simple exercise, you release tension and enrich your body with oxygen. "Kids can be cruel," he says. "I was subject to ridicule and bullying, which caused me to develop a very defensive and protective state of mind." When Jordan was in the ninth grade, his parents divorced. He blamed himself, and his weight soared. It wasn't until he became a football lineman that his 5-foot-9, 290-pound frame was put to good use. Then, tragedy struck. "When I was 14, my mom suddenly passed away," he says. "I'll never forget the moment I heard the news. I was in complete shock." The search for "Why?" provided no answers and drove Jordan further into despair. "Food became my outlet—my coping mechanism for dealing with my depression," he says. "I didn't care about my future." By the end of his senior year of high school, Jordan weighed 400 pounds. He doesn't know how heavy he became, because after graduation, he stopped tracking his weight. "Doctors told me I would die young from obesity-related complications; I told them, 'If that happens, then so be it,'" he says. It wasn't until after his accident that Jordan had a change of heart. Why Was Your Accident A Wake-Up Call? On March 30, 2008, I was in a car collision, and it took five guys to lift me up on the stretcher. The next day, I went for an MRI and barely fit inside the machine. They almost had to send me to a special version that is bigger than normal. That day, I decided that I'd had enough. I decided I had to change the way I lived and ate, and I started exercising. I decided I was worth the hard work and dedication that it would take to improve my future. No matter how hard it would become, I vowed never to give up. I realized there was no room for excuses, self-pity, or fear. The pain of what had to be done could never match the pain I felt from the way I was living. What Were The First Steps You Took To Transform Your Life? I started out walking my little Boston terrier, Blackberry. It took me an hour to walk her one mile—down and back up a hill. After that mile, everything hurt. I felt so uncomfortable. But I stuck with it, and we were eventually running 4 miles a day six days a week. When I thought about quitting back then, I knew I had to do this not only for myself, but for my dog, too! I lost 100 pounds just from walking. While on vacation in Las Vegas, I ventured into the hotel gym. I got to work, hoping that nobody would be around. Soon after, a few folks joined in. Instead of laughing at me and reacting the way I thought they would, they encouraged me. When I got home, I joined a local gym. If people thought I was out of place or had negative thoughts, that would be their problem. Flabby, fat, low energy and very, very unfit couch potatoes…yeah such is the over 40 years for many of us men. But when we hit 45 we start to crave the lost youth…or is it lost? Many a guy try to recap his youth with a fast car…even disasterous extra marital affairs. But when that has come and gone…it just leaves a sad unpleasant taste in the mouth. Then they realize they are bald, grey, overweight and have a heart problem plus high blood pressure…not even to mention the cholesterol. The pills add up and they are bigger in volume than your breakfast. Life’s future seems dim…and what you once had in your youth seems to be completely out of your reach and faaaaar gone… For many who have reached this point and have a serious heart problem…it might just be too late to recap what once was…but not impossible. This blog-post is meant for those over 40’s…Wake up! Open you eyes…there is a way…a GREAT way out. You might even feel better that you did in your youth because now you can apply some wisdom as well. Yip those testosterone levels will be waaaaay lower than when you where 20…but they are still very far from zero and each milligram of testosterone flowing in your veins has got SERIOUS abilities to help you regain that youth. You will not turn back the clock but you can start utilising each bit of testosterone to the fullest and let them do what they do…grow muscle, built up your body and in the process you will release even more testosterone. Those that have little will have less and those who have little but start to use it will get more…as simple as that. And on top of that, your body will start releasing higher levels of growth hormone when you reach a high activity level, meaning: feeling younger, better skin, more energy, lust for life and many other positive things…too many to mention. As with so many things in life those that grab opportunity and DO something will have and those sitting back will have less…much less. Yes, you CAN look better than you did when you was 20. I do and I am now 48 and every year I am looking even better than the previous one. You have serious control over both those two miracle hormones: testosterone and growth hormone. That is two key ingredients why you felt so good and look so good when you where young. But it will not just come by itself…you will really have to MAKE it happen. It will not happen by changing a single thing or starting to jog a little. To get those hormones released and get them to do their job you will have to train hard and vigorously. It will be painfull..initially. You can easily throw in the towel. Many does. How much do you want it? Think about it…I say…there is NO CHOICE! JUST DO IT! DO NOT TURN BACK! Be wise how you do it. Slow gradual steps…climb the ladder step by step…leap and you will fall. Full attack: Train right and train hard, eat correct for growth and recuperation, rest enough to allow recuperation and supplement with potent multi vitamins and lots of water. Become what you never was….become the best you can ever be. Be noticed…have a presence…and the best part…change inside. Don’t just make it and outside change. Make you like the whole you, inside and out. That makes this new change soooooo much more worthwhile. Care about the less privileged, care about your neighbour and start joining projects to help needy people. You can have a new body, a new lust for life, look and feel the best you’ve ever did and have the cherry on the cake of having that awesome feeling that you helped someone today…that you’ve made a difference… Those over 40’s have more time at their disposal…there should be no excuses. The same hold true for those over 50. It does not stop there…you can still look kick-ass and be over 70. The choice really is yours.
