Eastern BlackSea Region of Turkey

00:49
The Black Sea Region Lush and green throughout the year, rocky mountains, the cool waters of the coast and plantations of tea, hazelnuts, tobacco and corn, the Black Sea is a unique part of the country. The main industry is farming, thanks mainly to the high rainfall, andin the summer the roadsides are lined with hazelnuts drying in the sun. The culture, cuisine, climate and even dialect is different to the rest of Turkey, and the coastal road stretches from east of Istanbul to the border with Georgia. The cities in this region are Amasya, Artvin, Bolu, Corum, Duzce, Giresun, Gumushane, Kastamonu, Ordu, Rize, Samsun, Sinop, Tokat, Trabzon Zonguldak, Bartin and Karabuk. Akcakoca is on the far western side of the coast, with endless hazelnutorchards. Inland to the east is Safranbolu, with a wonderful collection of old Ottoman houses, and Devek, famous for its intricately carved walking canes.Further along the coast are Inkum, Amasra and Cakraz, and then Sinop which has been a port for 1000 years and is still one of the biggest in the Black Sea. The town takes its name from the Amazon queen Sinope and local mythology suggests that femalewarriors, called Amazons, lived in this region. It is now an important industrial and commercial centre.Unye and Fatsa, east of Samsun, are popular holiday resorts with natural scenic beauty, beaches, accommodation, campsites and restaurants. Ordu is a charming city with hazelnut orchards stretching out for miles in all directions and 46km east isGiresun, with its castle perched on a steep rocky slope, crowning the city and overlooking the beach. This is where the Roman general Lucullus saw cherries for the first time, and liked them so much he introduced them into Europe.Trabzon is another important commercial port on the Black Sea, and it connects with ports in other Black Sea countries. Trabzon Castle was founded on an area shaped like a table, and the architecture that developed around the castle reflects Byzantine,Commagene and Ottoman styles. The city's most important building is the Ayasofya Museum, the interior of which is decorated with frescoes, and the exterior with reliefs. From Boztepe Park and the Ataturk Museum there are stunning panoramic views ofthe city. Inside the Altindere National Park near Macka, the Sumela Monastery is perched on high cliffs overlooking the Altindere valley, and was founded in the 14th century by Alexius III. Inside the monastery is a church, a library, various other rooms and asacred spring. The area around Rize is the wettest in the country with wonderful shades of green, and is the centre of Turkey's tea production with plantations on the high terraces. Hopa is the last Turkish port before reaching the Georgian border, and to the southis Artvin. The city was established on the terraced hills overlooking the Coruh River, which is well known for rafting, and within the province are old Georgian houses and churches.

TURKEY: BLACK SEA FERRY HIJACK: SITUATION UPDATE

02:39
Natural Sound The Turkish government says it won't allow the hijackers holding 200 hostages on board a ferry to sail into the Bosporus strait to reach Istanbul. The statement by the Turkish interior minister contradicts earlier reports that officials had offered the hijackers a news conference in return for the release of all the hostages. The hijackers have threatened to blow up the ferry unless the Russians stop fighting the Chechens. The Turkish ferry the Avrasya-Eurasia on its way to the Bosporus strait and the port of Istanbul. The ship is laden with explosives and could reach the city early Friday if it maintains its current speed through the rough waters of the Black Sea. The ferry was seized by Chechen rebels on Tuesday night in the Turkish port of Trabzon. On board are some 200 hostages, whom the rebels have threatened to kill if the Russian government does not cease its war in Chechnya. The Turkish government however says it won't allow the ferry access into the narrow Bosporus strait. Turkish authorities says they have no intention of allowing the hijackers to score a publicity coup by sailing through the crowded straits. They claim it's against maritime rules to permit ships loaded with explosives to sail into the busy Bosporus, where about 150 ships pass each day. On board the rebels shouted "God is great" and "Long Live Independent Caucasus." There was no sign of the hostages however - they are apparently confined to the ship's restaurant. The Turkish government has not said what action it will take, but there's no indication they are offering any concessions to the hijackers. There are 144 passengers and 55 crew on board the ferry of whom about 30 are Turkish and about 100 Russian. Giresun, Turkey / Gateway to cultural. Cultural Heritage - History in Black Sea.

01:13
Giresun, Turkey / Gateway to cultural. Cultural Heritage - History in Black Sea. Giresun is the provincial capital of Giresun Province in the Black Sea Region of northeastern Turkey, about 175 km (109 mi) west of the city of Trabzon. The surrounding region has a rich agriculture, growing most of Turkey's hazelnuts as well as walnuts, cherries, leather and timber, and the port of Giresun has long handled these products. The harbour was enlarged in the 1960s and the town is still a port and commercial centre for the surrounding districts, but Giresun is not large, basically one avenue of shops leading away from the port. Like everywhere else on the Black Sea coast it rains (and often snows in winter) and is very humid throughout the year, with a lack of extreme temperatures both in summer and winter. As a result Giresun and the surrounding countryside is covered by luxuriant flora. As soon as you get beyond the city buildings you get into the hazelnut growing area and the high pastures (yayla) further in the mountains are gorgeous. Giresun has an humid subtropical climate (Köppen climate classification: Cfa), like most of the eastern Black Sea coast of Turkey, with warm and humid summers and cool and damp winters. Giresun has a high and evenly distributed precipitation throughout the year. Precipitation is heaviest in autumn and spring. Snowfall is quite common between the months of December and March, snowing for a week or two, and it can be heavy once it snows. The water temperature, like in the rest of the Black Sea coast of Turkey, is always cool and fluctuates between 8° and 20 °C throughout the year. Russian Warships Pass through Turkey's Bosphorus

01:59
Two Russian warships pass through Turkey's Bosphorus on the way to the Black Sea. Full Story: Two Russian landing warships passed through Turkey's Bosphorus on Tuesday (March 4) on their way to the Black Sea port of Sevastopol after Russia withdrew them from its navy's operations in the eastern Medierranean, Turkey's state-run Anadolu news agency reported. Ukraine's acting president said on Monday Russia's military presence was growing in the Crimea region and urged Moscow to halt what he called aggression and piracy. Oleksander Turchinov said the situation was "difficult" in some regions in the south and east of the country, where there are many Russian speakers, but that the Ukrainian authorities had matters there under control. He also said Russia's Black Sea Fleet had trapped Ukrainian navy vessels in the bays of Sevastopol, the Crimean port where the Russian fleet has a base. He gave no details of Russia's growing military presence in Crimea, where Russian forces are now in charge. An International Monetary Fund mission is also due to start work in Ukraine on Tuesday. Kiev hopes for an at least $15-billion loan package from the IMF to avert bankruptcy. Our Albayrak Group commenced its activities with the construction sector in 1996, executed projects only within the construction sector until 1982 and in that year entered the personnel transportation sector. The Albayrak group, which achieved an expansion parallel to the growth of the national economy, had sustained Turkey with the group’s investments in new sectors. With over 20 corporations, the Albayrak Group is constantly growing and continuing its operations in 6 different sectors; construction, real estate investment, industry, logistics, service, news media and tourism. The Albayrak Group, which had arrived at this point by giving over 5000 people a job opportunity, is looking at the future of Turkey with an unshakeable trust. Our group had entered the logistics sector with the personnel transportation in 1982, and became the leader of the sector within four years. Following the takeover of the management of the Trabzon Port in 2003, the Albayrak Group has made crucial contributions to the regional and national economy. A short while after this takeover, the handling capacity of the port had been raised from 3.9 million tons to 5 million tons through new investments and modernization studies. In the same manner, the Trabzon Port had reached 1,537,000 tons, in terms of handled material, and grabbed a slice of history with a 500% increase in container traffic. The Trabzon Port, which possesses a 1252-meter dock length, is providing continuous service in operations like; a 3-million-ton storage, a roll-on/roll-off access with 2000 vessel acceptance and a 250,000-passenger capacity, pouring, the port guidance of cargo and open transit materials, port location and clearance operations. The Albayrak Group is aiming to turn the Trabzon Port into the biggest port of the Black Sea Region with short and mid-term investments. The Albayrak Group continue to make its investments in the port sector that has an important position in the logistics field by means of taking over the 20-year-long management rights of the Mogadishu Port in Somali, which is the brother country of and has an important place for Turkey. With this new venture, the Albayrak Group is glad to acquire one of the ports in Eastern Africa, which carries great strategic importance, on 21 September 2014 with an agreement in the form of taking a share from 45% of the port’s revenue and giving the 55% share to the Somali government. In order to bring the port up to world standards, along with the equipment investments made for the port, before the takeover, and the placing of the Turkish management personnel that are experts in their related subjects, short and mid-term investments are also being planned. The port also became a new income source for the Somali citizens, in terms of new personnel being included in the working team. Our group, which is aiming for non-negligible developments in the development of the Somali economy that already has crucial resources, will be making an effort in installing new lines to the port, which will be serving vital international customers like MSC, SIMA TECH, CMA-CGM, and especially will be using its own past experiences in order to turn the port into a transit one.

Trabzon, located on the historical Silk Road, became a melting pot of religions, languages and culture for centuries and a trade gateway to Persia in the southeast and the Caucasus to the northeast The Venetian and Genoese merchants paid visits to Trebizond during the medieval period and sold silk, linen and woolen fabric; the Republic of Genoa had an important merchant colony within the city called Leonkastron that played a role to Trebizond similar to the one Galata played to Constantinople (modern Istanbul). Trabzon formed the basis of several states in its long history and was the capital city of the Empire of Trebizond between 1204 and 1461. During the early modern period, Trabzon, because of the importance of its port, again became a focal point of trade to Persia and the Caucasus. Trabzon Province has a total area of 4,685 square kilometres (1,809 sq mi) and is bordered by the provinces of Rize, Giresun and Gümüşhane. The total area is 22.4% plateau and 77.6% hills. The Pontic Mountains pass through the Trabzon Province. Trabzon used to be an important reference point for navigators in the Black Sea during harsh weather conditions. The popular expression "perdere la Trebisonda" (losing Trebizond) is still commonly used in the Italian language to describe situations in which the sense of direction is lost. The Italian maritime republics such as Venice and in particular Genoa were active in the Black Sea trade for centuries. Trabzon has four lakes, Uzungöl, Çakırgöl, Sera and Haldizen Lakes. There are several streams, but no rivers in Trabzon. As of 1920, the port at Trabzon, was considered "the most important of the Turkish Black Sea ports", by the British. It traded as far as Tabriz and Mosul. As of 1911, Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey signed an agreement to develop a harbor at the port. When the Russians occupied Trabzon, a mole was built. They built a breakwater and were responsible for creating an extended pier, making loading and unloading easier. In 1920, Trabzon produced linen cloth, silver filagree, tanning and small amounts of cotton, silk and wool. Tobacco and hazelnuts were exported. The tobacco produced in Trabzon was called Trebizond-Platana. It was described as having "large leaves and a bright colour."Trabzon was known for producing poor quality cereals, most which were grown for local use. Trabzon produced a white green bean, which was sold in Europe. It was, as of 1920, the only vegetable exported out of the province. Poultry farming was also popular in Trabzon. Sericulture was seen in the area before 1914. The area produced copper, silver, zinc, iron and manganese. Copper was kept for local use by coppersmiths. During the Balkan Wars production ceased due to poor exportation and fuel supplies.Wikipedia

Tragic day for shipping in Black Sea

00:57
http://www.euronews.com/ Appalling weather conditions in the Black Sea have proved fatal for shipping near Istanbul. The coal freighter Volgo Balt 199 sank in heavy seas with the loss of at least one crewmember. Another cargo vessel, the BBC Adriatic, was foundering nearby in high seas with 14 crewmembers on board after a mechanical failure. The vessel that sank sent a mayday in the early morning. Two rescuers also died after hitting rocks while answering the distress message. One was a fisherman. It happened near the northern end of the Bosphorus Strait, one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world. Four crew were rescued, but seven of the Ukrainian and Russian ship's company are still missing. Turkey's transport minister said rescue efforts by helicopters and coastguard ships were being hampered by increasingly bad weather. The channel is the only way Black Sea countries can ship their goods out, and that includes Russian oil and grain. Faced with the slowdown in international trade, some of Turkey's ship owners have left their cargo vessels stranded in port for months. In the Sea of Marmara, a major shipping transit point between the Black Sea and the Bosphorus, hundreds of sailors have been left by their boats, without pay or any knowledge of what could happen in the future. A voiced sound version of an AFPTV report.
