Brand driving away in vehicle STORYLINE: An oil train exploded and caught fire on Sunday in central Georgia, sending plumes of black smoke into the air. Georgian Interior Ministry spokesman Shota Utiashvili said the train had hit a mine. He said there were no casualties, but that the blast had also set off explosions at an abandoned munitions dump nearby. The Russian Defence Ministry declined to comment, saying it was not clear what had happened. Russia pulled the bulk of its troops and tanks from its small southern neighbour on Friday after a brief but intense war, but built up its forces in and around two separatist regions and left other military posts deep inside Georgia. The explosion occurred near the village of Skra, 10 kilometres (6 miles) west of Gori. At the scene, tanker cars lay in a confused jumble, some askew on the railway line and others off the tracks, some lying on their sides, while firemen hosed down the wreckage with foam. Speaking at the site, the director of Georgia's railways, Irakli Ezugbaia, agreed that the blast was probably caused by a mine. He said an investigation was under way and other mines had been found on the tracks. Ezugbaia said the train was carrying crude oil from Kazakhstan that was being transported by an Azerbaijani company. It was destined for a Georgian Black Sea port. Georgia straddles a key westward route for oil from Azerbaijan and other Caspian Sea nations including Kazakhstan, giving it added strategic importance as the U.S. and the European Union seek to decrease Russia's dominance of oil and gas exports from the former Soviet Union. Meanwhile, near the Black Sea port of Poti, Russian soldiers could be seen at their base on Sunday carrying out excavations. Russia pulled the bulk of its troops and tanks from its small southern neighbour on Friday after a brief but intense conflict, but still held positions near Poti. Georgian port officials have said radar, Coast Guard ships and other port facilities were extensively damaged by Russian troops. A U.S. Navy warship carrying humanitarian aid anchored at the Georgian port of Batumi on Sunday, sending a strong signal of support to an embattled ally. The much-needed aid and the damaged train were a stark reminder that it will take substantial amounts of aid and many months of rebuilding before Georgia can recover from the war with Russia. Five days of fighting damaged cities and towns across the country and displaced tens of thousands of Georgians. Situated in a subtropical zone near the foot of the Lesser Caucasus Mountains, Batumi is a popular tourist destination known for its varying weather–it is a bustling seaside resort during warm seasons, but can get entirely covered in snow during winter. Much of Batumi's economy revolves around tourism and gambling, but the city is also an important sea port and includes industries like shipbuilding, food processing and light manufacturing. Since 2010, Batumi has been transformed by the construction of modern high-rise buildings, as well as the restoration of classical 19th-century edifices lining its historic Old Town. Since the change of power in Adjara, Batumi has attracted international investors, and the prices of real estate in the city have trebled since 2001. In July 2007, the seat of the Constitutional Court of Georgia was moved from Tbilisi to Batumi to stimulate regional development. Several new hotels opened after 2009, first the Sheraton in 2010 and the Radisson Blu in 2011. The Trump Tower and the Kempinski was scheduled to open in 2013. The city features several casinos that attract tourists from Turkey, where gambling is illegal. Batumi was host to the Russian 12th Military Base. Following the Rose Revolution, the central government pushed for the removal of these forces and reached agreement in 2005 with Moscow. According to the agreement, the process of withdrawal was planned to be completed in 2008, but the Russians completed the transfer of the Batumi base to Georgia on November 13, 2007, ahead of schedule. In 2013, TAM GEO LLC announced it was investing $70 million to start construction of the 170-meter, 45-story mix-use complex Babillon Tower, which will be the tallest residential building in Georgia Batumi lies at the southern periphery of the oceanic climate (Cfb), but it is classified as humid subtropical (Cfa) according to Köppen's classification. The city's climate is heavily influenced by the onshore flow from the Black Sea and is subject to the orographic effect of the nearby hills and mountains, resulting in significant rainfall throughout most of the year, making Batumi the wettest city in both Georgia and the entire Caucasus Region. Cityscape Batumi's skyline has been transformed since 2007 with remarkable buildings and monuments of contemporary architecture, including: Radisson Blu hotel,Public Service Hall,Hilton Batumi,Leogrand A large Kempinski hotel and casino is to open in 2013, a Hilton Hotel as well as a 47-storey Trump Tower is also planned.Wikipedia

Ukrferry from Odessa, Ukraine to Batumi, Georgia - Greifswald Black Sea Ferry

01:58
This video features footage from the ferry crossing from Chornomorsk, near Odessa, to Batumi, Georgia via the ferry. Ukrferry's ship, "The Greifswald" took us across the Black Sea and the trip was incredibly enjoyable. On this voyage there were a few families, but mostly truck drivers and business people who were making the crossing. We were the only Americans on board, but were welcomed and met a lot of nice people. The food was much better than expected. They gave us vegetarian food when requested, and it was more than enough food to keep us full. The ship departed on time and arrived only an hour later than scheduled. Coming into Batumi was a great sight, as were the sunsets on deck. We passed by Crimea and could see the cliffs in the distance. If you are interested in taking this voyage, it's well worth the cost. The room was nice and larger than expected. The ship was clean. The staff was friendly. I can't say enough about how much I enjoyed this voyage. It was a "once in a lifetime" thing that many people from North America don't get to experience.

North-South Corridor (Kvesheti-Kobi) Road Project in Georgia

02:11
Located along a transit corridor connecting Europe and Asia, Georgia has the potential to link a number of countries in the region to the Global Economy. Roads from the break of bulk points on the Black Sea ports such as Poti, Sokhumi and Batumi, as well as from Russian Federation and Turkey. Aware of these circumstances, a number of infrastructure projects have been initiated by the Georgian Government to improve the physical as well as the operating climate of the land transport, with the support of international development partners. The solution designed in the Detailed Engineering phase for the section Kvesheti-Kobi reduces the length of this route from 35 km to 22 km, and the travel time from one hour to approximately 20 minutes, improving road safety conditions during operation. To achieve this, the future road will include several viaducts and tunnels, including an arch bridge, 432 m in length and with a span of 285 m over Khada valley. At the highest point of the route (3,300 m), under Mount Sadzele, a 9-km tunnel will be built using a 15 m in diameter tunnel boring machine (TBM).

RIVASI MEP on Batumi port terminal

00:41
Michele RIVASI MEP on Batumi Black Sea port, Georgia, terminal construction. Interview from European Paliament, Brussels The prominent French ecologist, the founder of the independent Commission of Chernobyl disaster Michele RIVASI MEP, The Greens, considers the launch of an independent research of the impact of the Batumi port enlargement on the environment and health, but also confirm that the project is profitable. “It is absolutely necessary that there are consultations with the citizens, and there is an independent research, and upon all these elements the citizens will decide, but it is not up to the gas lobby to decide in place of the citizens” RIVASI explained her vision of the future of the project. Trammo group formerly known as Transammonia Inc. intends to invest USD20 million in the construction of the terminal on the Black Sea. The inhabitants of the area, the ecologists, and the member of the Georgian March movement Valerian Meburishvili have been protesting against the construction of the terminal, presuming the project is designed to transport dangerous for people and environment toxic substances, potentially damaging human health, and sea life.

Ports of Baku, Batumi and Duisburg | New Silk Road. Connecting Europe and Asia

15:46
Having traveled more than one thousand kilometers from the China, through the vast territory of Kazakhstan, by rail, by road, through the port of Kuryk, cargo arrives here in Azerbaijan. The new Baku port is located 70 km south of Baku at the intersection of the transport corridor, which connects the countries we passed with Turkey, Iran, India, Russia and Western Europe. Further to the Black Sea, to the city of Batumi. For 10 years now, the port has been managed by the Kazakh national company KazTransOil. Today, Batumi Sea Port has 5 terminals, 11 berths and is capable of handling up to 18 million tons of cargo per year. Next we move to the final point of our route. In one of the oldest and largest ports in continental Europe. Dry port of Duisburg. It is in this terminal that about 90 container trains are received weekly. And one third of them falls on the new Silk Road.

US ship carrying aid docks in Batumi, instead of Poti

Various of ship docked in port STORYLINE: A US military ship carrying humanitarian aid docked at the Georgian port of Batumi on Wednesday. The ship, the Coast Guard cutter Dallas, had originally been slated to come to the Black Sea port of Poti, still controlled by Russian forces. But instead it arrived in Batumi, a port well south of the zone of fighting in this month's war between Russia and Georgia. Poti's port reportedly suffered heavy damage from the Russian military. In addition, Russian troops have established checkpoints on the northern approach to the city and a US ship docking there could have been seen as a direct challenge to Russia's continuing military presence in Georgia. The move comes after amid harsh criticism from the West of Russia's recognition of South Ossetia and Abkhazia as separate nations following the fighting. In a move that angered Russia, the US sent the missile destroyer USS McFaul to Batumi to deliver 34 tons of humanitarian aid on Sunday. The McFaul left Batumi on Tuesday but would remain in the Black Sea area, said Commander Scott Miller, a spokesman for the US Navy's 6th Fleet in Naples, Italy. The United States and other Western countries have given substantial military aid to Georgia, angering Russia, which regards Georgia as part of its historical sphere of influence. Russia also has complained bitterly about aspirations by Georgia and Ukraine to join NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation). The Russian military has also criticised the U.S. for bringing humanitarian aid into Georgia on military ships. SOUNDBITE (English) Eka Sharashidze, Minister of Development: "A great deal of what has been done by the US troops over the past couple of weeks has shown a strong signal to Russia and to the rest of the world that they're standing by Georgia, its democracy, its economy and Mount Whitney docking here in Poti port where Russian military still nearby, obviously it's a strong signal to Russia and to everyone else that Georgia is a sovereign country with sovereign territory and no-one else has the right to be here." 8. Wide of USS Mount Whitney 9. Various of Georgian coastguard boat STORYLINE: Georgia's development minister said on Saturday that the presence of the American warship, USS Mount Whitney, outside the Black Sea port of Poti sent a strong signal to Russia and the rest of the world that the United States was standing by her country. The flagship of the US Navy's Mediterranean fleet anchored outside the key Georgian port on Friday. "Obviously it's a strong signal to Russia and to everyone else that Georgia is a sovereign country with sovereign territory and no-one else has the right to be here," said Georgian Development Minister, Eka Sharashidze. During the war, Russian forces bombed Poti, which has a large oil shipment facility, attacked the port and sank eight Georgian naval vessels in the harbour. Hundreds of Russian troops continue to occupy an area on the city's fringes, just four miles (six kilometres) from the port but Russia insists the heavily armed soldiers are "peacekeepers." The continued presence of Russian troops has been a major point of friction between Moscow and the West. Western nations insist Russia has failed to honour a ceasefire deal to pull back to positions held before fighting broke out August 7. USS Mount Whitney was the first Navy ship to travel to Poti since Georgia's five-day war with Russia last month. The US said the Mount Whitney was on a humanitarian aid mission to Georgia but the operation has angered Moscow. Two American ships have already visited Georgia carrying humanitarian aid, but they anchored at Batumi, to the south, a smaller port where there is no Russian military presence. Russian media, Itar-Tass, reported that Moscow had doubts that the Mount Whitney mission to the Black Sea was for "a humanitarian purpose". Ships of such class can hardly bring large volumes of humanitarian aid, Foreign Ministry spokesman Andrei Nesterenko said on Friday. Russian officials also said that US military assistance to Georgia in the past had encouraged Tbilisi to launch the offensive in South Ossetia, and alleged that the US humanitarian shipments could be a cover for weapons deliveries. US officials have dismissed those accusations and said the aid includes blankets and powered milk and that no weapons are carried on the ships. But Russian President Dmitry Medvedev sternly warned against providing more assistance to Georgia in an apparent reference to the US aid shipments and a one (b) billion US dollar aid package for Georgia announced by Washington on Wednesday. US Destroyer Caught Between Two Russian Warships Off Turkey

US Destroyer Caught Between Two Russian Warships Off Turkey The Tomahawk-capable USS Donald Cook destroyer was caught between two Russian warships shadowing it near the Dardanelles Strait, a military diplomatic source told Russian media on Friday. The US vessel was said to have left the Strait at about 8 am local time, followed about ten minutes later by Russia's Admiral Essen, a Kalibr-capable frigate normally based in Sevastopol. At the same time, the USS Donald Cook reportedly maneuvered to avoid a collision course with Russia's Admiral Makarov frigate, en route to the Black Sea from the Mediterranean Sea, where it had engaged in military drills off the Syri4n coast in January. Social media users monitored the ships' passage through the narrow strait, posting photos of the close encounter. The USS Donald Cook entered the Black Sea on February 19, heading for Ukrainian Black Sea port of Odessa for a port visit. Russian media earlier reported that a Buyan-class corvette and a Yuri Ivanov-class intelligence ship were charged with monitoring the US destroyer's activities. The visit was USS Donald Cook's second entry into the Black Sea this year. In January, the ship visited the Georgian port of Batumi. In accordance with the 1936 Montreux Convention regulating the Black Sea naval traffic, warships from non-Black Sea powers are forbidden from staying in the body of water for a period of more than 21 days.

Russians staying longer, still in Black Sea port of Poti

SHOTLIST 1. Wide of Russian base 2. Russian soldiers milling around 3. Various of Russian soldiers digging and filling sacks 4. Mid of Russian APC driving into the base STORYLINE: Russian soldiers could be seen at their base on Sunday carrying out excavations near the Black Sea port of Poti in Georgia. Russia pulled the bulk of its troops and tanks from its small southern neighbour on Friday after a brief but intense conflict, but built up its forces in and around two separatist regions and left other military posts deep inside Georgia, including around Poti. Russian troops still held positions near Poti. Georgian port officials have said radar, Coast Guard ships and other port facilities were extensively damaged by Russian troops. The five day conflict between Russia and Georgia started when Georgian forces launched an assault on August 7 in the separatist region of South Ossetia, and Russian forces went in, sparking the war and an international crisis. Under an European Union-brokered cease-fire deal, both sides are to pull back to positions held before the fighting erupted. Western leaders have called for a complete withdrawal of Russian combat troops from Georgia, and for peacekeeping forces to resume the positions they had in South Ossetia before the conflict. But Russia said it will patrol buffer zones stretching into Georgia proper. The conflict brought Russian-U.S. relations to a post-Cold War low.

Sex Tourism Blights Georgian Black Sea Resort

05:31
Locals say their complaints are ignored. By IWPR team in Georgia The Georgian resort of Gonio has been taken over by the sex trade, and complaints by residents have gone largely unheard. The Black Sea village has attracted large numbers of women, many from Central Asia, who work in bars and clubs with a clientele mainly from nearby Turkey. People in the area say the loud music from night clubs stops them sleeping, while the seedy clubs and hotels have put off the holidaymakers who used to come here for the summer break. "No one wants to spend their holidays here because of those trucks, the Turks, and the prostitution. There's shouting, fighting and cars sounding their horns," one local man told IWPR. The village is administratively part of the port city Batumi, whose mayor Robert Chkhaidze has visited but only promised to stop the loud music. Geno Mgeladze of the Institute of Democracy has tried to investigate allegations that women are subjected to coercion and violence, but has found it difficult because they are reluctant to speak out. "They said in confidence that their handlers took away their passports by force, although they wouldn't confirm that on the record. They don't trust anyone and they're afraid of losing their jobs or being deported," he said.
