From Tragedy to Triumph - Ash Tree Success Story

03:56
This video, produced by Toronto and Region Conservation’s Partners in Project Green, examines how a pilot program takes dead ash trees from the Cities of Toronto, Markham and the Town of Richmond Hill and breathes new life into them by making useable lumber, or donating the trees to schools for woodworking programs or local artisans. Organizers say the program is turning an unfortunate situation into something far better.
The Iron Forest - The Secrets of Nature

49:09
The youngest of Austria’s national parks is also the country’s biggest continuous forest area. Ten million trees make the labyrinthine, fissured karst formations of the Reichraming and Sensen mountain ranges an endless green wilderness. But these mountain forests that were originally almost impenetrable lie in the midst of Austria’s iron industry. For more than a thousand years, it supplied the fuel for smelting iron from innumerable little mines in the region, especially from the Styrian Erzberg.

Rough destination in mind. No route planned. Sun shinning, Lets go that way. Get there eventually. Love this bike. Great for long journeys. Partner was comfortable And happy. Do have to adjust suspension two up. I like it soft solo, But sloppy two up cornering. Had to harden it. The GT Was hard work on some narrow forest roads. Small wheels don't like pot holes And i had to really work sometimes to corner, Especially around narrow bridges And embankments. Ha, Didn't tell partner though. But she was a little quiet And i think she knew. Hoping for more sunny days this summer. The UK hasn't had many this season at weekends. SOB.

The Flight of the Bald Ibis - The Secrets of Nature

50:45
Teaching migrating birds to migrate may sound like teaching your grandmother to suck eggs. But behind this curious-looking project is the story of a species persecuted to the point of total extinction in Europe. Since the 16th century, the bald ibis has been a mere historical footnote in every book on European bird life. Once a familiar sight in southern Central Europe and Turkey, the only wild populations, each of them dwindling, have survived in Morocco and Arabia. Yet this is a story of hope.

Fu Long - Little Panda Happy Dragon - The Secrets of Nature

48:02
"Entire Austria was buzzing with excitement as for the first time ever in the history of European zoos a panda baby was born naturally and in good health. In advance to this moment of happiness, a Chinese delegation called the little bear Fu Long – “Happy Dragon”. ORF’s Natural History Unit accompanied the panda baby throughout the first moments of its young life. Witness Fu Long’s clumsy attempts at walking, playing around in the adjoining garden and canoodling with his mother Yang Yang. This documentary offers not only sensational exclusive shots of the newly born baby in its birth box, being taken care of by its mother and the little panda’s visits to the veterinarian to assure healthy development but also tries to uncover the secret life of one of the most endangered species in the world. Fu Long is growing fast and getting cuter and lovelier every day. Have a look and join the “panda-mania” that crossed Austria’s borders spreading into whole Europe in no time."

In spring there is an explosion of life as the trees are weighed down with nests of cormorants, egrets, herons and storks. With the arrival of winter the landscape becomes silent and desolate. Otters are hunting fish under the ice of frozen lakes while White-tailed Eagles soar over gaps in the ice, targeting fish and birds. Since his early childhood wildlife cinematographer Jiri Petr has spent much of his time in this wildlife paradise. Together with him, we will explore this remarkable habitat and observe the changing faces of nature during the course of one year that inspired many artists and writers alike.

The Valley of the Ravens - The Secrets of Nature

50:23
At the edge of the Dead Mountains lies an enchanting, sparsely populated area – the inner Alm Valley. Especially in winter up to 120 half-grown ravens gather in the area around the wild animal park to steal food. This is the biggest permanent settlement of ravens in all of central Europe. They are blacker than night and smarter than parrots: ravens are capable of astonishing mental feats. How well does their bird’s brain really work? This documentary probes deep into the raven’s soul and follows his awkward flight around the entire globe. The film tells about the life and activities of the ravens. It tells about the observation of the Corpus Christi holiday and the magical "Echo Blowing" at Alm lake, about bringing the cattle down from the high lying pastures and about the hunt. About the idyllic research institute with all its residents – the students, the geese, chickens, dogs and sheep – and about Cumberland Wild Animal Park that inconspicuously and harmoniously hugs the shore of the Alm.

Pielach - The Enchanted Valley - The Secrets of Nature

49:08
The Pielach, with a length of 67.5 km, is a little known river at the foothills of the Alps, though biologically speaking, flowing through hidden natural treasures, it is one of Austria’s most valuable running waters. While the valley of the Pielach was settled by mammoth hunters as early as the ancient Stone Age, Celts and Romans left their traces later.

It covers approximately 4 hectares and, with 150 different species, is home to the world’s most complete collection of alpine animals. This makes it purely a themed zoo, where only animals from the alpine area are kept and displayed – there are no lions, elephants or giraffes here. The film concentrates above all on the zoo’s dedicated and highly specialised breeding and resettlement projects. Absolute rarities that worldwide are only kept in the Tyrolean alpine zoo are also presented. In the very heart of Europe, precisely in the centre of Austria, lies one of the most marvellous beauty spots of the Alps – a woodland, water and mountain wilderness that shuns no comparison with, say, wild Canada. Yet its rivers and lakes, ice-clad peaks, deep gorges and giant caves are just a stone’s throw away from picturesque cultural centres where Austria’s monarchs spent their summers.

Right in the heart of Europe, Austria can also look back over a past suffused with music and wine, both of which remain inseparably linked to this day. It is the vastness of Austria’s “Weinviertel” or wine growing region that captivates visitors. No other region of Austria suggests this feeling of endless landscape quite so vividly. A soft, hilly landscape, blessed with a warm climate, that is cultivated by humans but has maintained much of its original character – a quiet landscape with a considerable history and hidden treasures. And the Weinviertel hasn’t been given its name for nothing – wine growing defines the land in all its forms and has always been the distinguishing feature for the inhabitants of this unique region.

The Lembeh strait in the northern part of the Idonesian island of Sulawesi is a unique hotspot of marine biodiversity. Countless amazing creatures thrive in the underwater landscape surrounding Lembeh island. During four years a wildlife filmmaker couple spent many months in the region capturing hundreds of hours of behavior, lots of it never filmed before. Among other unique behavior the filmmakers were able to shoot an Anglerfish swallowing a Lionfish, a scene resembling Godzilla gulping down Dracula. Elegant seahorses, thumb-splitting Mantis shrimp, and deadly mini-octopuses are just some of the remarkable creatures traditional underwater films tend to overlook. As most of the underwater drama is hidden from plain sight only the groundbreaking macro photography in this film can reveal the awe and beauty of life in the Reef of Little Monsters.

Tales From The Wild Wood: Ep 4 (Nature TV Series)

31:38
Writer and woodsman Rob Penn begins a year-long project to bring part of an abandoned woodland, Strawberry Cottage Wood, back to life. Tales from the Wild Wood was a six-part series about British woodlands broadcast on BBC4 in autumn 2012. Presented by writer and wannabe woodsman Rob Penn, the series explored the great British love affair with trees. In 2011, Rob took over the management of part of Strawberry Cottage Wood, an area of abandoned broadleaf woodland at the entrance to the Llanthony Valley, in the beautiful Black Mountains, south Wales. Through managing the wood, the series explored the issues affecting British woodlands today: is man good for woods? Can woodlands pay? How can we value them in non-economic ways? Will our woods survive into the future? Each episode looked at the day to day management of a woodland – keeping pigs, trapping squirrels, coppicing, horse logging, the economics of our native timber industry, planting trees, future proofing woods, making and selling charcoal, improving biodiversity and encouraging public access. Using fascinating archive, the series also examined our historical relationship with woodlands, recalling the time when the woods employed thousands of people and provided the backbone of rural industries, industries that sustained the countryside over centuries. Rob was an amateur when he took over Strawberry Cottage Wood. To help him, he called upon a delightful army of expert woodsmen and eccentric foresters – Wyndham Morgan helped Rob make the wood safe, Iliff Simey explained the virtues of ‘natural forest practice’, Pablo Sanchez helped fell the big ash trees, Kate Morgan brought an 850-kilo Ardennes horse in to extract timber and Pooran Desai advised on the nuances of making and selling British charcoal. To understand some of the issues affecting our woodlands, Rob periodically left Strawberry Cottage Wood and journeyed round Britain, to Westonbirt to see a successful coppice restoration project, to Carmarthenshire to scrutinize a new type of wood fuel, to Witney Sawmills and even to a cricket stadium, to see ash stumps from his wood used in an international match. The British people have an innate affinity with trees: they touch us deeply in ways we don’t completely understand. Our woodlands are the least valued, sustainable resource we have left – yet there are over a million acres of unmanaged or under managed woodlands in Britain. Tales from the Wild Wood is a gentle call to arms – to manage more of our woods, and manage them better. Above all, it is a celebration of a fundamental and very beautiful part of the British landscape.

Kamp - A River for All Senses - The Secrets of Nature

49:13
Far from being a long, let alone a wide river, the waters of the Kamp river feed one of the most fascinating valley landscapes of Lower Austria. From its source to its estuary, which empties into the Danube, the river descends about 745 metres in altitude. A river course like the Kamp’s is a life corridor whose banks line increasingly rare wetlands, marshes, meadows, gallery forests, embankments, jungle-type shrubs and alluvial forests. While small sections of the river course were made a nature preserve, one whole section of the river was designated to become a “cultural park“. The region is shaped by its long-standing cultural tradition, the perfect soil for wine-growing, and an ever more strongly positioned gentle tourism industry.

Crookham Court Manor - Abandoned (boarding school)

59:41
At the eastern end of Crookham Common, Berkshire, England is Crookham House; Crookham was one of four manors into which the parish of Thatcham was divided at the time of Domesday. The first lords of the manor of Crookham were the Abbots of Reading, but by 1321 it had reverted to the Crown, who granted it to various noblemen during the centuries that followed. It's said that King Henry VIII was a frequent visitor there on his numerous hunting trips, being a relatively short distance from London. The first manor house was destroyed in 1543. Its successor was pulled down some time between 1845 and 1897. In 1748 the neighbouring Chamberhouse estate was purchased by George Amyand; he later extended his landholdings in the area with the purchase of part of Crookham manor and by 1768 had built the first Crookham House on the site of the present one. The Chamberhouse manor and estates were sold to Henry Tull in 1798; his family were living in Crookham House by 1847. It was they who pulled it down in about 1850 and erected the first phase of the present house on the same site. In 1830, Crookham House was involved in the so-called 'Captain Swing' riots when agricultural workers, concerned about their standard of living, roamed the countryside, breaking the agricultural machinery which they believed was keeping wages down. On the evening of 17 November 1830 a group of men arrived at Crookham House (the forerunner of the present building) intending to smash machines owned by the lord of the manor, Richard Tull. (the initials R.T. appear in the stained glass) They were met by Tull himself, his own labourers and special constables, but the mob failed to disperse. Tull and his men seized the ringleaders and a dozen or so were taken to Reading gaol. Ironically, it was a relative of the squire of Crookham, Jethro Tull of Prosperous Farm near Hungerford, who had published his influential treatise on agricultural reform 'Horse Hoeing Husbandry' a century before. Crookham House is in a simple neo-classical style and was built in three phases between 1850 and 1900. It was not destined to be a country residence for long: in 1939 the house, as well as a number of cottages and farms on the estate, was sold. Crookham House was bought by the Great Western Railway Company, and during the Second World War, their Chief Goods Manager had his offices there. After the war, the house was used for a variety of activities: as a school for military drivers, as the junior school of Carmel College and from 1953 it was used for some years by the US Air force as a school for the children of service personnel based at RAF Greenham Common. When they moved to other premises, the house fell into disuse until it was purchased in 1961 and re-opened as a boarding school - "Crookham Court", which closed in 1990. Since then the building has been divided into apartments. Since 2012 there have been plans to redevelop Crookham Court & more than 17 acres of land which surround it...link: http://www.newburytoday.co.uk/2014/new-chapter-for-crookham-court-still-to-be-decided In 1988 there was a high profile case investigation on the BBC TV program "That's Life" which led to three staff being jailed for sexually abusing pupils. In 1990 The schools owner Philip Cadman was sentenced to 10 years in prison in a trial at Reading Crown Court, reduced to six years on appeal. The owner returned to the building when he was released from prison and he lived there until he died, aged 91, in November 2007. In 2012 Mark Standish, was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment at Reading Crown Court after being found guilty of four counts of indecently assaulting a pupil. Perversely Standish wrote a book called ‘Suffer the Little Children: The Scandal of Crookham Court’, in which he told of 12 years of mismanagement and appalling conditions at the school. Mark Standish, was a tutor at the notorious boarding school in the late 1980s which came to national prominence when three of its teachers were jailed for 10 years for grave sexual offences against its pupils. Standish gave evidence for the prosecution against Crookham Court School owner Philip Cadman and two other teachers - William Printer and Anthony Edmonds - at the original trial in 1991. Before conviction Standish went on to build a respectable career which included becoming a producer for BBC’s Panorama, senior research fellow at Durham University, and then worked for the United Nations in Kosovo. Beloved I was attacking brushwood violently I touched motherland PERCUS! Magic circles and black stones PERCUS! Forest spells and damned souls PERCUS! I find worship in you PERCUS! Magic circles and black stones PERCUS! Forest spells and damned souls PERCUS! I find worship in you They will return, dance like fire, as before They will return, to the trees To the forest of mine... To the kingdom! PERCUS! Magic circles and black stones PERCUS! Forest spells and damned souls PERCUS! I find worship in you PERCUS! Magic circles and black stones PERCUS! Forest spells and damned souls PERCUS! I find worship in you Between the gates of Pomeranian kingdom of magic They will reign again the thrones of mighty fatherland! PERCUS! Magic circles and black stones PERCUS! Forest spells and damned souls PERCUS! I find worship in you PERCUS! Magic circles and black stones PERCUS! Forest spells and damned souls PERCUS! I find worship in you I rediscover their power and charm To defeat like a sorcerer Like thousand years ago Oaken castles from millennium before They will rise once again...as a sign... PERCUS!
