The story about Northmen
About three years ago - I (carpenter Jacob) asked a local village bladesmith Chris to make 3 timber framing tools (2 framing chisels and a slick) for my timber framed homestead project. Chris made the blades, I made the handles. After seeing the result of both our work I had an idea about creating hand crafted hand tools and sharing them with the world. At this time bladesmith Chris had to complete his own projects, so I found a young man named Janis in a nearby village who had recently begun his profession in blacksmithing. He showed me some of his pocket knife making experiments. I asked him to make 2 simple steel rings to protect my chisel handles from breaking. Afterwards I asked him to try out his hand in making replicas of chisels made by Chris. After much trail and error he showed some results. So I gave Janis my collection of my old hand tools (axes, chisels, drawknives) and we tried to make replicas together. That is how it all started. Together with my brother, we made the movies about the process of creating our tools. This is how we became known to the world. There is no one person named "John Neeman". The name was developed to appeal to broader audiences rather than our native names. The smith's name, Janis Nimanis, was used as a model to build this name from. The company, idea, philosophy and vision in my heart existed before the name "John Neeman" did. After some time, bladesmiths Chris, Martin and Peeter, joined us as they were master bladesmiths with over 10 years of experience. We worked, as a team of craftsmen, until Janis together with his brother decided to open a side project. This was to be a different, independent and original project where Janis wished to produce different knives than those of the coalition of our designs crafted at Neeman Tools. In the beginning we had no problems with this request. However, it soon became apparent that many of the tools and knives being produced by Janis, were duplicates of our designs, exact replicas. After this was discovered, it was decided by us that Janis needed to leave Neeman Tools. When he did, he took the name "John Neeman" with him and has used it to single himself out as the original and only smith at Neeman tools. The fact that after seeing the result of our all work and the demand for our creations Janis has decided to make his own side project and has decided to copy our designs, does not allow him to take our established brand name "John Neeman" together with him. As a crew of craftsmen, as a team, this went against our grains of belief that any one member was more important than the rest. We are all equal, free craftsmen that work together for the betterment of us all and those that use our tools. EQ works (Toronto, Canada) established in June 2013, formerly Cyberplex, AKA EQ inc were not interested in correcting this. This public Canadian company has embarrassed itself in its use of the same name and virtually identical digital web branding to the established brand EQworks.co.uk. EQworks.com is hardly an innovator and they claim to be socal media location experts. This is a total joke! EQ works.com specialise in media branding & social media and yet look at the similar brand they now adopt...it's lazy, cheap & shameful. EQworks.co.uk, (EQworks UK) Emotional Intelligence experts utterly reject this use of branding and declare that they are in no way associated with the new EQworks.com. We'd especially like to tell our Canadian customers and colleagues they have no relationship to us and accept they have confused our web branding. EQworks.com may be a big public company whose directors decided to use their legal team to say 'it's gonna be expensive to take us to court' . EQworks.co.uk will not be intimidated or bullied. Their new brand is unwelcome, confusing and short-sighted in it's obvious similarity. This video seeks to clarify what has become clouded and reinforce the uniqueness of the EQworks.co.uk brand. Pre-plan The pre-planning I'm talking about is what I consider your number one brand asset and that is your website. Your website is your hub with all social media channels as the spokes; your website must be more than just a brochure on the web; it has to be interactive; with resources -- articles, blogs, news items, a hook, etc. Your website is your rock, your anchor, your number one asset for your business. If you don't put the time, energy and yes money into creating, designing, and molding it into what you are all about and sharing valuable information with the community and market to the right people you are trying to reach, then you won't be found. Buy a domain name in your name regardless if you are going to use it (get one for kids too); Domain name should represent you and what you do -- you'll need to be creative as the dot com's are getting fewer and fewer. Step 1 Identify your brand -- your personality and values; what makes you different/unique? Who are you? What do you do? And Who Do you do it for? Be honest with yourself; look at yourself in the mirror and ask what I'm I all about? What are you passionate about? The recent phenomenon happening is a foreign brand wanting to collaborate with young Chinese designers. 4. How should Young designer brands get through common difficulties such as designs, brand promotion and development? With Nicole Chen's knowledge in marketing and brand image development, she talks about the difficulties linked with running a brand and having to manage staff, financial and business decisions as well as the time and energy that one has to invest in the project. Having a strong experience of the western fashion industry, she explains the importance of Trade shows and how it contributes to the development a new young brand and therefore it a great opportunity for starting designers. She explains that unfortunately in China there are very few trade shows which are a big problem for the development of the fashion industry in China.
