How to write like an architect

02:36
Take the 'How to Write Like an Architect Course,' Plus get Doug's hand written architecture font. https://thearchitectsacademy.usefedora.com/p/how-to-write-like-an-architect Hi Im Doug Patt and this is how to architect. Today well learn How to write like an architect. The basic drafting tool for an architect when working by hand is a parallel rule. You can also use a t-square. Ill be using an ames lettering guide to create the lines for the lettering. First were going to create our horizontal lines using the lettering guide. The guide has a variety of spacing options to create just about any combination your looking for. I will also be using a small triangle. Ive added tape to this one for ink lettering to avoid smearing. Ill also be using a .5mm pentel drafting pencil and a paper mate, flair pen for the letters. Ive created a small grid here to give me some guidance when I lay out the letters. Id say the most important thing to remember about hand lettering is that your letters need to seem animated while still appearing orderly and neat. I think this is achieved by using a few conventions. For example, youll notice the letters have some amount of incompleteness. The second diagonal on the A does not follow all the way to the guide line, the bottom of the B or D isnt complete, The bottom line on the E starts in front of the vertical. The second thing is that all the horizontals in the letters are drawn by hand, not using the parallel rule. They all sit at a slight angle making them dynamic and yet uniform. Youll also notice that I use the ruler for all vertical lines. Lastly, when making your Os, Qs, Cs, Gs, even 8s and 9s, the letters and numbers are simply combinations of semi circles. Even the letter S is made the same way. These are two images from my portfolio. They are good examples of how your strings of words will come together to form orderly yet animated paragraphs. This is a quote I found from Tyron Edwards Dictionary of thoughts I enjoy referring to from time to time. It seemed appropriate for a youtube video because giving people the most amount of knowledge in the least amount of time is really what drives the information age. So, remember hand lettering is about style and legibility. Mine is definitely stylized and probably a little tough to read sometimes. So thanks for checking out how to write like an architect. Im Doug

The Keshibon can stamp even without an ink pad. The Keshibon uses a unique, newly developed textual pattern that includes Gothic text as well as Ming style typeface which are often found on printed materials thus making it difficult to see the address printed on direct mailings . Until now, when documents such as postcards that contained personal information were thrown away, they either had to be torn up, cut up, or put through a shredder, and this was labor intensive However, the Keshibon can be used to easily protect personal information by covering up that information. The Keshibon can be used to easily hide your address and other personal information with just one quick stamp and eliminates that hassle involved with tearing, cutting, or scribbling over important information.

Santa Maria del Mar(XIVth cent.) Barcelona-Catalan Countries

01:57
The first documentary reference we find to the church of Santa Maria del Mar is in a text from the year 998. This basilica is the work of the architect Berenguer de Montagut, and the first stone was laid to commemorate the conquest of Sardinia, which completed the Catalan domination in the Mediterranean initiated ten years earlier with the conquest of Mallorca, and which reached its fullest extent with the entry of Sicily and Greece into the domains of the House of Barcelona. Externally, it is the only perfectly-finished Catalan Gothic church. Its outer walls display the features which differentiate Catalan Gothic from European. In the Catalan style, there is a predominance of horizontal lines, of solid panels over empty spaces, of flat terraces without roofs, and a preference for large bare surfaces. The buttresses are swithout flying buttresses as in the European Gothic cathedrals, and the towers are octagonal and flat-topped. The interior of the church is of an extraordinary beauty and has exceptional acoustic conditions that make it an ideal space for concerts, usually of classical and Oriental music but occasionally of jazz. THE LAST CALLIGRAPHERS

02:12
A document on the last handwritten newspaper in Asia. The fax machine on 76-year-old Editor-in-Chief Syed Fazlulla's crowded desk is by far the most sophisticated technology in the room. It whizzes and burps forth a stream of scribbled notes from a correspondent in New Delhi. Fazlulla, who is deep into creating the next issue of the handcrafted The Musalman daily newspaper, frowns as he deciphers the handwriting and searches for a cover story. After some consideration, he passes the page to his brother who translates it into Urdu. He in turn sends the text to the back room where writers take calligraphy quills in hand and begin. Here in the shadow of the Wallajah Mosque, a team of six puts out this hand-penned paper. Four of them are katibs -- writers dedicated to the ancient art of Urdu calligraphy. It takes three hours using a pen, ink and ruler to transform a sheet of paper into news and art. "I write because I love the language," says Rehaman Hussein, a mustached katib who has written the paper's front page for more than 20 years. "Urdu is a clean language. It is the language of our Koran." But the Musalman's future is uncertain because the art of Urdu calligraphy is a fast-fading tradition. The newspaper has no clear successor who would produce it in its handwritten form when Fazlulla can no longer do the job. The issue is a source of tension between him and his son Syed Nasarulla, who runs a greeting-card business out of a loft directly above his father's office. He would only reluctantly take the paper's reins. "I understand Urdu, but have no interest in calligraphy," Nasarulla said. "There is no practical reason we have not gone to computers. If my father asks me to take over I will take over, but there will be changes." In the meantime, the office is a center for the South Indian Muslim community and hosts a stream of renowned poets, religious leaders and royalty who contribute to the pages, or just hang out, drink chai and recite their most recent works to the staff. The Musalman publishes Urdu poetry and messages on devotion to God and communal harmony daily. The newspaper's content is not exactly hard-hitting. It covers the basics of local politics and the writers translate stories from English papers into Urdu. Still, the paper is widely read and appreciated by Muslims in Tripplicane and Chennai where the paper has a circulation of 20,000. While the Musalman is a Muslim newspaper, it is a hub of South Asian liberalism, employing both women and non-Muslims. Half the katibs are women and the chief reporter is Hindu. Staff members say that Indira Gandhi, former prime minister of India, once called the business the epitome of what modern India should be. Fazlulla believes the handwritten pages are crucial to the paper and to the tradition of handwritten Urdu. For centuries, handwriting was the definitive mark of social status, education and liberal values in India. Calligraphers mastered the swooping Urdu script in ivory-tower institutions and penned copies of the Koran for wealthy patrons. The pinnacle of a katib's achievement meant a seat at court and a chance to earn the sultan's ear. Similar to spoken Hindi, Urdu is a mixture of Arabic, Persian and local Indian languages. It originated in the army camps of Muslim rulers in Delhi and has been the language of poets and artists because its rich roots draw on so many traditions across various cultures. - Scott Carney A film by Premjit Ramachandran http://www.100hands.com

War of the Poems ♥

01:39
A war is waged when I write. These poems are a struggle an epoch fight. The fires of this conflict now burn bright A battle for her with victory in my sight. My words are the warriors with who I fight. Weapons of love Smashing enemy heartbreak with such might. They wear armor of hope which protects and shines so bright. A battle for her with victory in my sight. The enemy fights back, but to the sword my pen, I cling so tight. Memory of you inspires and is my guiding light. I must win, as defeat means the darkness of lonely night. A battle for her with victory in my sight. This video was made for a woman who is currently very angry at me. I hope through exhibition of creative talent, I can woo her to be friendly once again. For everyone else, please spread it around, so it becomes popular. The more popular it becomes, the closer we are to getting back together and being friends once again. The video is a poem I wrote with a medieval style theme. Most of the artwork in the video is from the middle ages. The music also has a medieval feel to it. I was also planning on including a text style that resembled medieval calligraphy, however my current movie maker did not have the option. chess

02:14
The work in question is a hand-engraved chess. The dimensions of the board are 1m by 1m. The pieces are 18 cm high, with the exception of the king and the queen, which are 19cm high. The width of the pieces varies from one piece to another, but none of them is wider than 9 cm. This chess is made from walnut tree, and its purpose is primarily ornamental, but if somebody has a wish to play with it, it can serve this purpose as well. I think this work of mine should not be observed solely as chess, but firstly as an attempt to depict two different civilizations. On the one hand there is Greece, representing the foundation of the western culture, on the other hand there is Persia, the foundation of Near and Middle East. These two civilizations marked the period of several centuries BC. Pawns on both sides are presented as soldiers with authentic gear from their times. On their shields, all the soldiers have a unique image from mythology, folklore or religion of their people. Hence, Greek worriers have images of Prometheus, Minotaur, Centaurs, Cerberus, Cyclops, etc. Persian worriers have a unicorn, winged lion, phoenix, griffin, as well as the image of the founder of Persian country, Cyrus the Great, and the goddess Anahita. The rook with Greeks is presented as a catapult and with Persians as a siege ladder. In this way, I tried to evoke Persian often campaigns on Greek towns and their sieges. With Greeks, the knight is presented as Pegasus, and with Persians as winged lion. By doing this, I wanted to emphasize to which extent were myths and mythic characters important in everyday lives of these peoples. The bishops are presented as archers, whereas with Persians they are presented in the same way as on frescoes in the antique town of Susa. The king and the queen with Greeks are Zeus and Athens. In this way I emphasized the polytheism of Greek religion. At the same time I evaded presenting these two figures as monarchs being aware of the fact that Greece is the home of democracy regardless of the fact that certain Greek towns had kings as well. Zeus is presented wielding the terrible thunderbolt and Athens with a helmet on her head and a spear in her hand in accordance with their antique pictures. With Persians, the king and the queen are presented in the same way in which the rulers were presented in reliefs. The king is holding in his hands the symbol of royal power, the scepter. The Persians were the first who introduced it as a marker of royal power, and nowadays everybody use it in the process of coronation. The chess board is made in such a way that it looks like a book. When closed, on one side there is Greece and on the other side is Persia. There are motives that present these cultures in the best possible light. On the Greek side there is a presentation of Trojan horse, the famous Myron's statue the Discobolus (Discus Thrower) and the ship Argo, the ship in which traveled Jason and the Argonauts in the most famous Greek myth. In the middle of this part of the board is written "Greece" in Old Greek. On the Persian side is written"Persia" in Old Persian. There is also the presentation of the tomb of Cyrus the Great, Persian relief from the view of the royal palace and the sphinx of Darius I, which is placed in Louvre, as well as a written text in Old Persian from the palace of Darius I. Swann Galleries Auction Preview Art Nouveau Posters Part 2

09:10
On Wednesday, December 17 Swann Galleries will offer an outstanding private collection of 11 posters by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and seven by Alphonse Mucha as part of their annual auction of Rare & Important Art Nouveau Posters. The posters are from the collection of Bob and Peggy Marcus, who assembled their collection over the course of 30 years. They continually sought out the finest examples, always with an eye on condition. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire these extraordinarily rare and important works in exceptional condition, said Nicholas Lowry, Swann President and Poster Specialist. The auctions top lot is a copy of Lautrecs Moulin Rouge, La Goulue, 1891, the artists first poster, in the very rare three-sheet version, and with the original top banner. Likely the single most important poster in the history of graphic arts, the enormous color lithograph advertises a performance by can-can dancer La Goulue at the famous cabaret. When the poster was first released, dealers found the size unmanageable and discarded the top banner, making versions with the original top virtually unavailable. The provenance goes back to Lautrecs own estate, after which it passed on to his close friend, art dealer Maurice Joyant, and then descended to his heirs. (Estimate: $250,000 to $350,000). Other featured works by Lautrec include The Chap Book, with an image of one of Lautrecs favorite haunts, the Irish-American Bar at 33 Rue Royal. Not mounted on linen, this example in its original paper state is basically in the same condition as the day it was printed ($50,000 to $75,000); Salon des Cent, a poster also referred to as La Passagère du 54 or Promenade en Yacht, inspired by a beautiful young woman Lautrec met in the summer of 1895 when he was traveling by ship to visit his mother. The image was created from a photograph taken aboard the ship ($50,000 to $75,000); and La Loge au Mascaron Dorè [The Box with the Gilded Mask], which offers the artists only head-on view of a theater box—all others were shown from the side. This example is the works first state, which was printed in a run of only 100, with very wide margins, signed and numbered by the artist ($40,000 to $60,000). Among the Mucha highlights in the collection are an exquisite 1896 image for Job rolling papers, which features the long, luxuriant tendrils of a young womans hair intertwining with the smoke from her cigarette, a recurring motif in Muchas posters ($20,000 to $30,000); Zodiac, 1896, an example of the full maturity of the artists style, with every one of his signature design elements represented, this is the original version of the image, published as a calendar by Champenois ($15,000 to $20,000); Reverie, 1897, one of Mucha's most popular designs, this version with no text was sold to collectors and connoisseurs ($15,000 to $20,000); and a previously unknown variant of the Times of the Day, a calendar used to advertise a Parisian store specializing in signs and window shades ($12,000 to $18,000). Notable works by Mucha among the material from other consignors are the celebrated Bières de la Meuse, 1897, considered a classic in its own time ($30,000 to $40,000); Monaco, Monte-Carlo, a lush and symbolic image, 1897 ($20,000 to $30,000); and Flirt, a romantic advertisement for Lefevre-Utile biscuits, 1899 ($8,000 to $12,000). Belgian Art Nouveau is represented by a small run of works by Privat Livemont, including his masterpiece Absinthe Robette, Brussels, 1896 ($12,000 to $18,000); and Adolphe Crespins poster for the famous architect and designer Paul Hankar, Brussels, 1894 ($8,000 to $12,000). Desirable Italian posters include Leonardo Bistolfis Prima Esposizione Internazionale dArte Decorativa Moderna, Turin, 1902, depicting muses dancing in a field ($10,000 to $15,000); and Giovanni Matalonis La Tribuna Roma, for a Rome newspaper, 1897 ($4,000 to $6,000). The auction also includes several works by Jules Cheret, among them Palais de Glace, depicting elegant ice skaters, Paris, 1896 ($12,000 to $18,000), and a set of four panels representing The Arts, a triumph of color lithography ($40,000 to $60,000); Théophile-Alexandre Steinlens Lait Pur Stérilisé, 1894, featuring his signature cats ($20,000 to $30,000); Maurice Biaiss La Maison Moderne, 1900, promoting a store devoted to the Art Nouveau finery of the day ($8,000 to $12,000); and two of OGalops posters for Michelin picturing the iconic Bibendum, aka the Michelin Man, Nunc est Bibendum / Le Pneu Michelin Boit lObstacle, circa 1898 ($6,000 to $9,000), and Le Coup de la Semelle Michelin, 1913 ($5,000 to $7,500). Rounding out the sale are works by Cappiello, Grasset and Pal. There are examples from the German Secession; American works by Bradley; and posters promoting champagne, chocolate, and much more.

Muller-Brockmann Animation

00:44
"Stravinski, Berg, Fortner" is a poster designed by the Swiss graphic designer Josef Muller-Brockmann in 1955. He used straight, parallel and perpendicular lines and Akzidenz-Gortesk (a predecessor to Helvetica) font in his composition, emphasizing sleek and clean design. I took his poster and used Adobe After Effects to animate its separate parts, creating a moving and evolving creation, an animation jumping out from the static page. The animation was set to the music of Igor Stravinski, one of the artists advertised by the Muller-Brockmann poster.
