Convicted Felon Wants To Join Army

02:09
The Army is looking for new recruits. A 27-year-old Independence man wants to join, but his past is keeping him out. "I just want a chance like everybody else gets a chance," Kevin Kimerer told KMBC's Chris Nagus. "I'd like to join and serve the country." The problem is that Kimerer spent two years in prison for attempting to distribute drugs. The Army makes some exceptions for felony convictions, but not when it comes to murder, violent sexual crimes or drug dealing. "They take some felons, but the crime I was convicted of they don't mess around with at all," Kimerer said. "Right now, it seems nobody ever forgets. Nobody ever lets it down." Kimerer said he believes that his 2002 conviction and time in prison might make him a better soldier because he's used to a hostile environment. "I think I have more steadiness under pressure than an 18-year-old out of high school. People change and they can," Kimerer said. He said the Army won't accept him, even though he has letters of recommendation from his employer, parole officer and even a master sergeant in the Air National Guard. "Have people open their eyes -- just because you have been in trouble doesn't always mean your always going to be that way," Kimerer said. An Army representative said that convicted felons are looked at on a case-by-case basis. Ten military members must approve the applicant, including a general.

9 Simple Things Can Help Sell Your House

04:27
It is a tough market out there if you're trying to sell your home. But despite what you may think, it does not have to cost you a lot to polish up your house when you're ready to sell. 1. Spiff up everything on the outside of the home. Edge the yard and plant flowers. 2. Add lighting to the interior and exterior. While it may seem like a small expense, most buyers will probably drive by your home at night. 3. Touch up paint where needed. 4. Go with neutral paint colors on the inside. 5. De-clutter and tidy up the house. 6. Pay attention to the front door. Make sure it's spotless. 7. Deep clean the house. 8. Straighten up the basement. 9. Buy a pre-home inspection. It may cost about $300, but it will eliminate unpleasant surprises. KMBC's Martin Augustine reported the Pawsat family has done all nine. Amy Pawsat's dining room used to be a deep blue color. But not anymore. The colors are beige. Augustine reported that in real estate, beige is not a boring color. "The majority of people who are buying are not looking for bright, happy colors," real estate agent Emily Aylward Vogt said. Aylward Vogt said that a coat of neutral paint is an easy way to streamline. "So buying a can of beige paint is going to all of a sudden widen the net of people that will go into this house and say, 'Wow, this dining room is really sharp,'" Aylward Vogt said. Augustine reported that the Pawsats also repainted their bedroom in a neutral tone. The family also de-cluttered the home. One place you might not think about when it comes to de-cluttering your house is your refrigerator. The Pawsats cleaned off everything except for two of their children's favorite magnets. "I think it was harder on the kids. They like to see their stuff up there," Pawsat said. While de-cluttering sounds easy, it isn't for most people. "It takes a couple of Saturdays and a couple of Sundays and some determination to really to get your house to the point where everybody in the world's going to walk in and have big eyes and say, 'Wow! This looks great,'" Aylward Vogt said. Augustine reported that real estate agents recommend paying attention to your front door. Make sure it is spotless with a fresh coat of paint and shiny new handle. Why? It's all about making a good first impression.

Homicide Detectives In Terry Blair Case Speak Out

04:03
Kansas City homicide detectives who investigated convicted serial killer Terry Blair are speaking out about the case and the possibility of more victims who may never be found. "This was our first crime scene. Actually, this is the first time I've been back here since it happened," police Sgt. Doug Neimeier told KMBC's Lara Moritz. The scene at 26th Street and Montgall Avenue was just the beginning in the case. "We got here and worked the scene, went home and little did we know what was coming next," Neimeier said. Two bodies turned into six with the killer playing a phone game with detectives. "I've never been involved in a case where the killer is actually calling down here and talking to us, somewhat taunting us. That was a new one for me," Detective Rob Blehm said. "It bothered me at night. 'OK, when are getting the next call? How many are we going to have?'" Detective Donie Hoffman said. Eight detectives working the case said with each scene and each body, they felt Blair watching over them. "I think everybody was looking over their shoulder. I got a weird feeling," Neimeier said. "That eerie feeling we had was probably true." "We all thought if he was going to be hanging out there, he could have been watching us at all the scenes," Detective Joe Marinella said. The phone calls abruptly stopped. But that didn't stop detectives from finding and arresting Blair a few days later. "I'll never forget when he was in there, when they were talking to him. I have so many questions for that guy right now, today," Neimeier said. During a bench trial, Blair was convicted of six murders. The job detectives did was not well-received by the judge, who did not approve of A&E Network crews that followed the detectives. The judge said the camera crew impaired the detectives' investigation. "I felt deflated. We're supposed to be feeling like, six murders here and he's found guilty on all six. I left the courtroom feeling like, 'Did we just not do our job right?'" Hoffman said. "I cannot be anymore proud that I am of the people who worked on this, and when those things are said, I'll be honest, it's hurtful," Neimeier said. Moritz reported that there is something more disturbing about the case. Did Blair kill more women than just the six he was convicted of killing? "How many did he do that we haven't found yet? Unless he talks in jail and confesses, he's the one who did it," Detective Randy Morris said. "I believe there are more out there. Everything he said we found to be true. He's the only person who knew where these bodies were. He said there were more," Detective Steve Morgan said.
