How E-Ink Works: The Technology Behind E-Paper Displays | Pocketnow

E-Ink. It powers everything from the YotaPhone 2 to the Amazon Kindle. It's simultaneously one of the most understated and futuristic display technologies around. And it's being put to use in devices and venues you've never even thought of. But what exactly is E-Ink, and how does it work? That's a question we had for the folks at E-Ink Corporation, the brains behind the world's leading electrophoretic ink technology, and they were more than happy to answer it. They invited us to tour their Innovation Center and Headquarters facility in Massachusetts to get a firsthand look at the technology behind E-Paper Displays, as well as some historical context and a few sneak previews of where E-Ink is headed next. LG G6 After The Buzz: Still one of our favorites? | Pocketnow

06:46
Watch our latest episode of After The Buzz as we discuss one of our favorite smartphones of 2017, the LG G6. Surely its market acceptance hasn't been as stellar as its major competitors, but that doesn't mean this phone is a slouch. What the LG G6 doesn't offer in marketing, it compensates for in unique features you won't be able to find on other smartphones. The amount of innovation brought here is definitely hard to find anywhere else. Watch our full video to learn more. -- Most new device launches go the same way: usually the press gets review units before they’re widely available, and we get to use them for a few days -or a week if we’re lucky- as we work on our review. Then press day arrives. The embargo on media coverage lifts, and everyone posts their reviews and videos at the same time. It’s a huge frenzy, commenters go nuts, and it’s a giant explosion of frantic opinion-sharing activity. For about … a day. And then it all goes away. Sure, there’s followup coverage as people find bugs and hidden features, but after that initial blast, not many people revisit the device to see how it feels a few months later, because everyone’s already focused on the next big deal coming down the pipe. So let’s do something about that. Let’s see how we feel about devices when they’re not shiny and new anymore. This is After The Buzz. Sony WH-1000XM3 Hands-On: Great audio meets design!

03:02
If there's one thing Sony knows is audio, and the company has used the IFA show floor to bring us a reminder. The company has just announced three new audio products at IFA, all focused on bringing much needed refinements to they're respective predecessors. The new WH-1000X Mark 3 are is probably my favorite out of the two. My experience with the Mark 2 was that they had great audio, but on a really bulky design. The Mark 3s enhances the audio further, but working heavily on improving the design. The feel of the Mark 3s is metallic, now toned with some copper accents in the branding and accents. Sony has worked on reducing the overall footprint of the headphones, avoiding the gap these made between the headband and the ear muffs. To assist in prolonged use, there's some added cushioning at the top of the band, and ears regularly fit inside the ear muffs. Pairing works throughNFC where supported, and controls are swipe gestures if you want to skip tracks, raise or lower volume. If you tap and hold you also activate either the Google Assistant or Siri, depending on what phone you're using. There's also a Sony Connect app for the headphones to take them a step further, but this wasn't ready at the time of our hands-on. The signature feature continues to be the Active Noise Cancelling. Regularly great ANC comes at the expense of good audio, but these headphones are plenty loud. There are also options to be able to blend ambient noise whenever needed, through one of the buttons, or with a cool trick where you place your palm on top of the right ear cup. There's 30 hours of battery life, and a unique trick is a USB C connector that supports fast charging, so you can get up to 5 hours of a charge in just 15 minutes. Overall my first impressions leave them above even the Bose QC35, which also retail for the same $350 that Sony is asking. I still need more time to try them out, so stay tuned for our full review with more details. Sony CLIÉ NR70 Review: What The Future Looked Like In 2002 | Pocketnow

05:10
Despite its resemblance to its clamshell contemporaries, the Sony Clié PEG-NR70 wasn’t a phone. Sony called it a "Personal Entertainment Organizer," but it was basically a PDA on steroids. (In a time when smartphones were still in their infancy, there was a market for standalone personal digital assistants to manage your calendar, memos, and address book.) With this one, though, Sony took a few extra steps –both in feature load and hardware design– and the resulting pocket computer is just as unique today as it was in 2002. iPhone SE vs iPhone 6s: Which should you buy? | Pocketnow

04:38
Much noise has been made about the littlest iPhone inheriting the processor and camera of its big brother flagship phone. Considering the price difference between the two, the iPhone SE makes a pretty compelling argument for why you should buy it, especially if you like smaller smartphones. Are there any compromises to be made here, and what reasons might someone have to step up to the larger iPhone 6S? Here's a quick comparison between Apple's entry level option and the top of the line iPhone. Surface RT - After The Buzz, Episode 22 | Pocketnow

09:35
It was supposed to be the game-changer. The revolution-starter. The device that made Windows tablets cool. But it wasn't long after the Surface RT launched to middling reviews (and some pretty absurd TV commercials) that the prospects for this first Microsoft-designed tablet started looking bleak. While most folks praised the hardware, the Windows RT software came with a lot of limitations. And due to Microsoft's decision to launch the device at a price point identical to Apple's iPad, the Surface RT's story quickly started looking a lot like HP TouchPad, Part II. But the folks at Redmond stuck by their new release, quickly following it up with a Pro version running the full build of Windows 8, and the Surface RT stayed relevant enough for us to squeeze a comparison or two out of it. Say what you will about Microsoft, the company is persistent. That persistence led to some results - but unfortunately not the good kind. Microsoft was recently forced to take a write-down of over $900 million on unsold Surface inventory, a situation exacerbated by a lawsuit claiming that the company effectively lied to shareholders by withholding information about the less-than-ideal Surface RT sales situation. In an effort to turn the embarrassing situation around while still possibly eking out a small profit, Microsoft slashed prices on the Surface RT just in time for the back-to-school season: the tablet now starts at a retail price of $349, which puts it within reach of many more cash-conscious college students and parents. Is the price drop enough to make the Surface RT an attractive option? Has enough improved in the almost ten months since release to earn the tablet a better review this time around? Is it possible to post a Surface-related piece without the Microsoft fanbase exploding in a cacophony of rage? There's only one way to find out: our Surface RT review redux, a.k.a. After The Buzz episode 022, is here for your viewing pleasure. Give it a gander, then let us know whether you're planning on picking up a Surface RT of your own! Most new device launches go the same way: usually the press gets review units before they’re widely available, and we get to use them for a few days -or a week if we’re lucky- as we work on our review. -- 2016 was already Samsung's best year with the launch of the new Galaxy S line-up. The experimentation with metal and glass of the previous year matured into the an S7 duo that was finally able to delight both design purists, and power users alike. The Galaxy Note 7 was then supposed to compliment the lineup with even more power… but we already know how that ended up.. So for those of you that still think that grabbing a Galaxy S7 edge is taking a step back, it actually isn't. I honestly can't remember the last time that I was truly impressed by a presentation. For those of you who claim that smartphones have gotten boring, this one is Not. Huawei claims the Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro are here to be a welcome you into higher intelligence, and we'll have a good review period to prove that. Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Hands-On - The best phone?

06:13
This is the Samsung Galaxy Note9. The successor to what we highly regard as the King of phablets. That phone that does more than your standard phone. Samsung is boldly confident that this is the best device in the market, but there's really only one way to find out. Reporting from New York City I'm Jaime Rivera with Pocketnow, and it's time to go hands-on. At a glance the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 looks like everything the Galaxy Note 8 should've been, meaning this is more an iteration with significant and logical improvements. Galaxy Gear vs Pebble | Pocketnow

06:15
The Pebble smart watch set the wearable-tech space on fire when it broke all previous records to become the biggest-ever Kickstarter surprise earlier this year. But it wasn't its fundraising ability that prompted a few of us on the Pocketnow team to pre-order one; it was the promise of a smart watch that was actually, you know ... smart. That's a promise that the Pebble delivered on when it arrived at our doorstep last spring, and we've been enjoying our little wrist-borne mobile companions ever since. But the folks behind Pebble aren't the only ones trying to make a name for themselves in the wearable computing game. In addition to the handful of smaller competitors sprouting up across Kickstarter and Indiegogo, and the somewhat forgettable efforts from larger companies, a mammoth new contender has just belly-flopped into the smartwatch pool. Samsung's Galaxy Gear is the boldest, most feature-packed, and best-marketed smart watch the world has yet seen. Resembling a miniaturized smartphone more than an oversized watch (and with a price tag to match), the Gear certainly isn't for everyone. But its potential-packed feature set has prompted us to spring to its defense in the face of lukewarm reviews, and Samsung's decision to market it as a companion to the well-regarded Galaxy Note 3 means it's easily the most visible smart watch in the US for the time being. That puts the Galaxy Gear squarely up against the Pebble in the battle for consumers' wrists. As these two watches will soon be sharing shelf space in stores across the land this holiday season, we thought we'd take you on a tour of the (few) similarities and (many) disparities between them. So buckle your wrist-straps in tight; it's Galaxy Gear vs Pebble Smartwatch time - and unlike our IFA video, this ain't no show-floor comparison. You'll wanna pay close attention to this deep-dive if you plan on asking Santa for the right piece of future-tech this year. And be sure to stay tuned for more Galaxy Gear coverage, continuing all through this week! After my love affair with devices like the Galaxy Nexus and the Nexus 6P, both the largest phones of their time, I explicitly decided to decline on the larger Pixel XL, and use the smaller Google Pixel as my personal communicator. For years this job has belonged to an iPhone given its reliability, but after six months of switching things up, I'll admit I'm not regretting my decision one bit. Sennheiser PXC 550 Review: Bring the noise! | Pocketnow

Read more: Lee más en Español: http://es.pocketnow.com What makes a really good pair of headphones? For some people it's really more buying into the more popular brand, and for others, it's for the quality of the audio. For me it has to be a blend of audio quality and convenience, and I think I found the perfect blend for both. It's finally time for our review of the Sennheiser PXC 550. Over the course of years reviewing products, I've received many over the ear headphones. If you've paid attention to my reviews, you might have noticed that I actually ignore them. Worst Gadgets Ever 002: Microsoft Kin | Pocketnow

06:47
The Microsoft Kin. The very name conjures a sense of loss. The whole fiasco still bears that special flavor of disappointment that only the spectacular collapse of an ambitious concept can deliver. The Kin device family was born of the ashes of the Sidekick and the Hiptop, in the wake of Microsoft's acquisition of Danger. It promised an early peek into what would eventually become the new Windows Phone, and ushered in some of the UI concepts we see in the platform today. Unfortunately, according to reports from sites covering the saga at the time, the Kin was also the victim of corporate infighting and a steadfast refusal to commit the necessary resources to its development. As a result, it arrived on the market in a decidedly half-baked state, was paired with a truly horrible data plan offering from Verizon Wireless, and accordingly, failed in spectacular fashion. Sales were halted barely three months after they began, with some rumors quoting global sell-through figures in the hundreds. What made the Kin so repugnant? Was there anything worthwhile at all in this strange pair of devices, with their peculiar packaging, strange interface, cheap plastics, and mushy buttons? What was it like to hold a Kin Two during the short time it was offered on the shelves of America's largest carrier? How much of the old Kin interface remains in today's Windows Phones? We'll try to answer some of those questions in Episode 002 of Worst Gadgets Ever. Check the video above. Apple Pencil: A Guided Tour | Pocketnow

Learn more about the iPad Pro in our full review at Pocketnow: /2015/11/25/ipad-pro-review (Full description below) When we reviewed the iPad Pro last month, we did so in a vacuum. Apple's supersized tablet had beaten its accessories to our front door, so we reviewed only the device itself, reasoning that there were some people who would buy it for its built-in attributes alone. While it's a fine product, with a huge screen that makes it especially good for media consumption, the iPad Pro still feels hollow without something more. Fortunately for iPad Pro buyers, "something more" is just $99 away in the form of the Apple Pencil. The supersized stylus packs a built-in battery and Bluetooth radio into its glossy white fuselage, and it unlocks a whole new dimension of the tablet experience. The Apple Pencil is to the iPad Pro what 3D Touch is to the iPhone 6S: a feature that's easy to dismiss as a mere gimmick – until you pick it up and use it. We’d like to thank you all for participating in our question of the day, and we love your feedback so much, that we decided that since we can’t respond to ever single one of your comments, we should at least feature a couple in a weekly video. This is the Pocketnow Daily Recap. Since we only have 3 minutes on every Daily video to go through the hottest news, the weekly recap will serve as a more extensive discussion where we also include your thoughts on the subject. Sadly, for the sake of time, we can’t guarantee that your comment will be featured, but if you want some tips on what we look for the most: 1. Keep it short 2. Stick to the point 3. Try to get some likes on your comments, which usually happen if you nail the first two tips above We hope to make this a weekly show, and we also hope you enjoy it as much as we love reading your thoughts and comments every day. Sapphire Screen: The Making of A Scratch-Proof Smartphone Display | Pocketnow

04:48
If you followed our coverage from MWC in Barcelona, you might remember a demo by Jeff Nestel-Patt of GT Advanced Technologies, showcasing a smartphone display 2.5 times stronger than Gorilla Glass that was, for all intents and purposes, impervious to scratches. If you missed that video, maybe you caught our article from last week discussing sapphire's importance to the future of the mobile industry. If you missed both of those, then you're still in luck - because this piece right here trumps them both. You see, it turns out that the GT Crystal Systems facility at which much of the aforementioned sapphire is manufactured sits just up the road from Pocketnow's Boston offices in Salem, MA. So Jeff, being the nice guy that he is, invited us for a visit to get a feel for just how sapphire smartphone displays are made. And since we like science and smartphones, and really like it when those two fields intersect in a way we can photograph, we packed our camera and went for a ride ...
