How To Calculate Cube Roots In Your Head

04:37
Here's how you do cube roots in your head! Avoid looking like Education Secretary Nicky Morgan who was stumped when asked to do a cube root: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8CV0dfQMdU Note: the starting number needs to be a perfect cube. So it's more of a magic trick: ask someone to cube a number and then you can deduce their original number quickly. Check out my book "The Best Mental Math Tricks" (rated 4.7/5 stars on 4 reviews) http://amzn.to/18maAdo Can you multiply 97 by 96 in your head? Or can you figure out the day of the week when you are given a date? This book is a collection of methods that will help you solve math problems in your head and make you look like a genius. Multiply Numbers And Algebra Equations By Drawing Lines

04:48
Some people say this is "how the Japanese multiply." Others say this is "Vedic Math." I'm not sure of the origin, but this is a visual way to multiply two numbers and it does work. The video also shows how to use the same method to multiply algebraic expressions like (x + 2)(x + 3). Here's a blog post I wrote on this: http://mindyourdecisions.com/blog/2012/01/27/multiplicating-with-lines-math-trick-how-it-works/ Many people asked me to write a reference guide. So I wrote a book "Multiply Numbers By Drawing Lines." https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1500866148/ I've made a few follow-up videos you might like. Can You Solve This Crazy Equation? Ramanujan's Radical Brain Teaser

02:57
In 1911, Srinivasa Ramanujan posed this problem involving an infinite nested radical (a never-ending expression that has square roots inside of square roots). Can you figure out how to simplify the equation? The video presents an intuitive solution. Technically it is necessary to prove the equation has a solution (the nested radical converges) because crazy things can happen with infinite expressions. The technical proof is included in a link below. Blog post (text/image explanation). I also justify why the pattern continues for the first solution: http://wp.me/p6aMk-4Dd Technical proof http://www.isibang.ac.in/~sury/ramanujanday.pdf Intuitive proof algebra http://mathforum.org/library/drmath/view/52674.html StackExchange discussion http://math.stackexchange.com/questions/7204/limit-of-nested-radical-sqrt1-2-sqrt13-sqrt1-cdots Thanks to Patrons! GENIUS TRICK - Convert Decimal Numbers To Binary (Base 2)

02:51
This video gives a method to convert decimal numbers to binary numbers quickly. This is a variation of the remainder system that is typically taught in courses. I like this method because it gives the answer in the correct order from left to right. Proof of why it works: http://math.stackexchange.com/questions/86207/converting-decimalbase-10-numbers-to-binary-by-repeatedly-dividing-by-2 I also give a proof in this post on my blog (skip down to the section with the proof and the discussion of dividing by 2 and ignoring the remainder) http://mindyourdecisions.com/blog/2014/08/27/the-egyptian-method-russian-peasant-multiplication-video-and-a-proof/#.VSLhBPnF98E If you like my videos, you can support me at Patreon: http://www.patreon.com/mindyourdecisions Connect on social media. The Quadratic Formula - Why Do We Complete The Square? INTUITIVE PROOF

09:50
The quadratic formula is really useful, but its derivation is confusing to many. Like what is the point of "completing the square" anyway? In this video, I show how "completing the square" has a geometric interpretation--you are actually making the areas of two squares equal to each other! Blog post (text/image summary): http://wp.me/p6aMk-4kG You can read more about the history of the quadratic formula and its geometric roots from Cornell Mathematics professor David W. Henderson: http://www.math.cornell.edu/~dwh/papers/geomsolu/geomsolu.html While researching this post, I came across a website that offers a visual interpretation of the quadratic formula that helped me design the graphics: https://sites.google.com/site/butwhymath/algebra/the-quadratic-formula Special thanks to Patrons! The 80-20 Rule Explained (Pareto Principle)

The 80/20 rule or Pareto principle comes up a lot in economics and business. But why does this pattern emerge? I show why using a paper clip experiment. Note: VSauce later made a video about Zipf's law that uses this same experiment but does the math incorrectly. The long tail should be for the single chain of long length. The 3 Jug Riddle

03:10
You have a full 12 liter jug and empty 5 and 8 liter jugs. Can you measure exactly 6 liters? This problem dates to 1484 and was posed in the context of a milkman making a home delivery to a customer. The story goes this riddle so delighted Simeon Denis Poisson as a young boy that it was one reason he pursued mathematics. Can you measure all whole amounts from 1 to 12? Answer in blog post: http://mindyourdecisions.com/blog/2015/09/13/the-3-jug-riddle-sunday-puzzle/#.VfXYpRFVhBc There's a similar puzzle from the movie "Die Hard 3." How can you measure 4 liters from 3 and 5 gallon jugs? What's The Best Soup Can Size? Solved With Calculus!

03:54
A cylindrical can with volume V can be made in different ways. The cylinder can be wide and short (large radius and small height), or it can be narrower and taller (small radius and larger height). Which shape uses the least material? That is, which can has the least surface area? Solve for the ratio of the height to the radius. This video presents the optimal ratio. My blog post for this video http://wp.me/p6aMk-4Ps I first learned about this problem from "Aha! Solutions" by Martin Erickson: http://www.maa.org/press/books/aha-solutions I also came across this problem from the DataGenetics blog, which also did an analysis of actual cans. Many commercial products are actually pretty close to the optimal size. The soup can is nearly a perfect design! http://datagenetics.com/blog/august12014/index.html If you like my videos, you can support me at Patreon: http://www.patreon.com/mindyourdecisions Connect on social media. How Crossed Ladders And Working Together Problems Are Related - The Harmonic Mean

04:18
Problem 1: Two ladders are criss-crossed against walls of height 3 and 5. At what height do they intersect? Problem 2: I take 3 hours to complete a job, and you take 5 hours to do the same job. How long does it take if we work together? This video demonstrates that both problems have the same answer--equal to half of the harmonic mean--and the two answers are related geometrically! You can multiply two numbers if you know how to double, halve, and add up numbers. This is really interesting: basically the Egyptians were using binary multiplication! Watch the video to see how it works. The Prisoners Dilemma - The Most Famous Problem in Game Theory

05:31
The Prisoner's Dilemma is the most famous problem in game theory, as it shows that individuals who make rational decisions might end up in an outcome that's worse for everyone in the group. In other words, individual rationality does not imply group rationality. Watch a higher quality version of this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJCGTNIwmv8 You can also read my blog posts about the prisoner's dilemma here: http://mindyourdecisions.com/blog/tag/prisoners-dilemma/ Check out my book--"The Joy of Game Theory"--that covers the prisoner's dilemma game. Can You Solve A Problem That Stumped A Stanford Math Major? The Ratio Of Areas Of Squares

04:41
I majored in math at Stanford, but this geometry problem stumped me and I had to look up the solution. A square is inscribed in a circle. A smaller square is drawn; one side is shared with the inscribed square, and the other two corners touch the circle. What is the ratio of the large square's area to the small square's area? This problem was asked during a job interview. I could not solve it; can you? Watch the video for a solution. *Small correction: at 1:35 I said "small circle" but I meant "small square." This problem went viral after it appeared on a Math Olympiad test for talented students in Singapore. It's not a trick question! Here's the problem, which I have very slightly re-worded for clarity. Blog post (detailed text explanation): http://mindyourdecisions.com/blog/2015/04/14/when-is-cheryls-birthday-answer-to-viral-math-puzzle/ Source: https://www.facebook.com/kennethjianwenz/photos/a.173663129479243.1073741827.167504136761809/385751114937109/?type=1&theater Official Solution: http://mothership.sg/2015/04/p5-logic-question-is-actually-a-math-olympiad-question-for-sec-3-and-4-students/ Albert and Bernard have just become friends with Cheryl, and they want to know when her birthday is. Cheryl gives them a list of 10 possible dates. May 15, May 16, May 19 June 17, June 18 July 14, July 16 August 14, August 15, August 17 Cheryl tells Albert the month and Bernard the day. Albert says, "I don't know when Cheryl's birthday is, but I know that Bernard cannot know either." Bernard then says, "At first I didn't know when Cheryl's birthday is, but now I do know." Albert concludes, "Now I know when Cheryl's birthday is." So when is Cheryl's birthday? A Problem WolframAlpha Can't Solve, But You Can (615 + x^2 = 2^y)

I didn't solve this problem myself, but I felt better when I learned WolframAlpha couldn't solve it either! But there is a way to solve it using careful mathematical reasoning. Thanks to Luka Khizambareli from Georgia for suggesting this and sending its solution! The Media Got The Math WRONG - The Golden Ratio

04:12
15-year old Joseph Rosenfeld thought he spotted an error in the Boston Museum of Science. The exhibit Mathematica has a sign that says the golden ratio is (√5 - 1)/2. He remembered and checked online that the golden ratio is supposed to have a positive symbol, (√5 + 1)/2. He left a note for the museum. Then, the museum publicly declared it was in error and would change the 3 spots where the 34 year old exhibit was wrong. Then the museum did an about stance and said they were correct all along. HUH? The media went crazy about this story that a "teen spotted an error in museum." Actually the museum is correct. In this video I'll explain the central issue: there are two ways of writing the golden ratio. Lune Of Hippocrates - Famous Ancient Math Problem

04:55
Hippocrates of Chios solved this, nearly 100 years before Euclid even wrote The Elements, and before we knew the exact formula for the area of a circle. This is said to be the first precise mathematical of the area between two curved lines. Learn how he solved for the area of a crescent-shaped lune (same Latin root as luna for moon). Almost Everyone Got This Question Wrong. Can You Solve It?

A tetrahedron and a pyramid have edges of equal length. If they are glued together on a triangular face with the vertices aligned, how many faces will the new shape have? This question is trickier than it looks! It stumped the test-makers. Game Theory Puzzle: The Race To 15

03:59
I have seen this puzzle in a few places. Most recently I came across it in Peter Winkler's "Mathematical Puzzles: A Connoisseur's Collection" http://amzn.to/1DcPE4V The Race to 15 Game Theory Puzzle. Alice and Bob take turns selecting cards numbered 1, 2, .., 9 without replacement. (Alice goes first, then Bob picks a remaining card, and so on). The first player to make a set of 3 cards that adds up to 15 wins the game. Does Alice have a winning strategy? The video relies on the fact there is only 1 unique arrangement. The Rule of 72 - TRICK To Calculate When Investments Double

04:31
The rule of 72 tells you how fast your investment will double. It is interesting mathematically and as a rule of thumb for quick mental calculations. I do NOT think it is practically useful for the stock market as returns are not fixed. How Closing Roads Could Speed Up Traffic - The Braess Paradox

02:50
The Braess Paradox is an unexpected result from network theory. It states that adding capacity could actually slow down the speed of the network. Applied to highways, the Braess Paradox means the existence of some roads slows down traffic, or that closing some roads could speed up traffic. The Braess Paradox can also explain the "Ewing Paradox" in the NBA and sports--that a star player may hurt a team's offence. There are also applications in physics and how far a pair of strings stretch under gravity. The Braess Paradox is a result that individual drivers are seeking the fastest roads, and when all drivers make the same choices the roads are congested (this is an example of a Nash equilibrium from game theory). The inefficiency is a result of a lack of coordination, so this is known as the "price of anarchy."
