Recently Apple introduced Apple Business Chat, which came with the launch of iOS 11.3. Apple's business messaging offering essentially allows brands to communicate with consumers via iMessage on their iPhone, rather than relying on the wireless carriers and SMS short codes. In this Apple Business Chat Demo from 1-800-Flowers, Derek Johnson from Tatango walks you through the process of ordering flowers, all within his native mobile messaging app. What's really exciting about this demo is that at the very end of the ordering process, he's actually able to use Apple Pay to pay for his order, and this is all done within his native mobile messaging app. Apple Business Chat is brand new, and currently only has a handful of brands using the service, such as Apple, Discover, Hilton, The Home Depot, Lowe’s, Marriott International, Newegg, TD Ameritrade, Wells Fargo, and 1-800-Flowers. Shared short codes are used by many different brands. The short code owner hands out specific keywords to these brands so that it is clear who the consumer is trying to interact with. Shared short codes are cheap in comparison to dedicated short codes that are only used by one brand, but they bring along disadvantages. AT&T Bans Shared Short Codes - Now What?

We’ve just received notice that AT&T plans to end support industry-wide for shared short codes. A shared short code is a 5-6 digit number used for SMS marketing, but instead of being used by just one brand, it's used by many different brands. After this change goes into effect, only dedicated short codes will be supported by AT&T. When Will Shared Short Codes Stop Working? **AT&T Update**

[Original Video] https://youtu.be/FGyEryws-6U On October 30th, AT&T announced they'll no longer be supporting shared short codes on their wireless network. A shared short code is a 5-6 digit phone number used by many different businesses and organizations to send text messages to phone numbers. Unfortunately with many different businesses and organizations using the exact same phone number to send text messages, it can cause issues, which is why AT&T is planning to stop supporting them. So what is someone using a shared short code supposed to do? The first option is to migrate your messaging traffic to a dedicated short code. A dedicated short code is a 5-6 digit phone number that is only used by one brand, and these types of short codes will continue to be supported by AT&T and other wireless carriers. The other option is to migrate your messaging traffic to a 10 digit long code. The only problem is right now, AT&T and other wireless carriers don't support A2P traffic on long codes. So what should you do if a dedicated short code isn't in your budget, and you want to move to a 10 digit long code? Essentially, wait, as AT&T is planning on deploying a new program, which will support 10 digit long code traffic for A2P type messaging. How long do you need to wait? We're not sure right now, but we do know that in February 2019, AT&T plans to announce when the rollout of the commercial 10-digit program will take place, and when the rollout occurs, that's when you'll have 3 months to transfer your messaging traffic from a shared short code to a 10-digit long code. SMS Geofencing: Technically Feasible - Financially Impossible

This video provides an explanation for how SMS geofencing works. When mobile apps make use of geofencing, it means that they track the location of mobile phones via GPS. A brand like Starbucks uses geofencing to locate phones from customers who agree to be tracked, and then they send them targeted in-app push messages when they are near or inside one of their locations. SMS geofencing on the other hand is technically possible, but it’s unfortunately financially impossible to do. Usually when marketers are talking about SMS geofencing, they’re usually talking about segmenting their mass text messages to subscribers, based on previously collected location data, like the subscriber’s home zip code. Apple's business messaging offering essentially allows brands to communicate with consumers via iMessage on their iPhone, rather than relying on the wireless carriers and SMS short codes. An SMS aggregator is a company that sits between software providers, brands, developers and wireless carriers. The aggregator builds connections to the wireless carriers so that developers, software providers and brands do not actually have to connect to all 30+ wireless carriers in the United States. Aggregators spend money upfront for building these connections. Depending on the wireless carriers, aggregators pay a flat fee and/or a per message fee for those connections so that they can send as many messages as they want. Then they resell those messages and the access to the wireless carriers.
